Mocs Post Second Straight Shutout Victory, Down Bluefield State 9-0

LAKELAND - One day after posting a 9-0 shutout victory at home against West Chester (Pa.), Florida Southern did exactly the same thing on Wednesday afternoon as the 10th-ranked Moccasins defeated Bluefield State (W.Va.), 9-0, in a non-conference match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

With the victory, the Mocs improve to 8-3 on the season and improve to 4-1 on its current eight-match homestand. Bluefield State fell to 0-6 on the year.

In Wednesday's win, the Mocs opened by allowing BSU to win just five points in sweeping all three doubles matches, including junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) posted an 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot. FSC's nationally 10th-ranked No. 1 doubles teams of senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) earned an 8-2 win and seniors Joalis Domingez (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) improved to 8-2 on the season with its 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot.

Meanwhile, in singles, the Mocs allowed BSU to take just 19 games off of them, including at the No. 4 spot where Friedrichs needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Tafadzwa Mawisire, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. That was the only match in singles that was close as the Mocs combined to allow just seven points over the other five singles matches.

No. 22 ranked Riutort earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot, while Dominguez, who was playing in the No. 2 spot for the first time this season, earned a 6-1, 6-2 win and Spagnuolo picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot.

At the No. 5 spot, senior Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) posted an impressive shutout win (6-0, 6-0) over BSU's Laura Hernandez and senior Pamela Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot to improve to 4-1 on the season in singles.

The Mocs will continue its homestand on Friday, March 21 as they host Washburn (Kan.) in a 2 p.m. match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Washburn match was originally scheduled for Monday, but was postponed and pushed back to Friday due to inclement weather.
