Mocs Win Late Night Match at #22 Cal State-Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - Florida Southern continued its California trip here Sunday by playing well into the night in posting a 5-2 rain-shortened match over No. 22 ranked Cal State-Los Angeles at the CSULA Tennis Complex.

The match, which was originally scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Eastern, but finally got underway at around 8:30 p.m. Eastern, was delayed due to the rainy weather in the Los Angeles area on Sunday. The match was completed at around 1:30 a.m. Eastern after the rains left only three courts playable and two singles matches unfinished.

In doubles action, the Mocs (3-2) opened the match by picking up wins at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the line-up. At the No. 1 spot, senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain), who are ranked 10th nationally in Division II, picked up an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot over CSULA's tandem of Leora Hemmerich and Sydney Postal, while freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) and junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) defeated CSULA's Sonia Landeros and Tiffany Leung, 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.

CSULA (4-2), though, prevented a sweep in doubles as its No. 3 team of Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zargarian defeated FSC's tandem of senior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) and senior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany).

Meanwhile, in singles play, the Golden Eagles earned its other point in the match at the No. 1 spot in the line-up as Hemmerich, who is 46th in Division II singles, posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over 10th-ranked Riutort. The loss was the third of the season in singles for Riutort, all of which have come against nationally-ranked foes.

FSC. though, would seal its win by picking up wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots. At No. 2, 36th-ranked Goge picked up a straight set win over Tiffani Shaik (6-4, 6-2), while Dominguez earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Landeros and Friedrichs improved to 2-3 on the season with her win at No. 5 against Leung (7-6, 6-3).

In the two matches that weren't completed, CSULA's Postal led at No. 4 over Spagnuolo (6-5, 0-5), while Wichmann was tied 4-4 with Victoria Vo in the first set at the No. 6 spot.

The Mocs conclude its three-match trip to Southern California on Monday, March 3 as they face 17th-ranked UC-San Diego in San Diego at 5 p.m.
