First Five Points Won by Florida Southern in 5-4 Victory Over Missouri-St. Louis

LAKELAND â€" After four straight lopsided victories in the span of a week, 10th-ranked Florida Southern slipped past Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday, 5-4. The win extended the Moccasins’ winning streak to five matches and ended a 4-match winning streak for the Tritons.

Although the final score of Wednesday’s match was close, the Moccasins (10-3) actually won it by scoring the first five points, sweeping doubles and taking the first two singles matches that were completed by junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) and senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) in the top two flights. The Tritons (9-4) then took the final four singles matches, and three of those four had at least one set go out to 12 games.

The day started with an 8-0 win by the No. 2 doubles team of freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) and junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.), their fifth straight win, and their third during that stretch in shutout fashion. Riutort and Goge took an 8-2 decision at the No. 1 doubles position before seniors Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) posted their fifth straight win at No. 3, defeating Natalia Carvalhais and Lina Parra, 8-4.

Goge dropped just two games in winning her singles match in two sets, pushing her own winning streak to 11, and Riutort clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top singles flight.

Florida Southern will be on the road Wednesday at the University of Tampa for its first Sunshine State Conference match in more than a month. The Moccasins and Spartans are scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
