Oatman's Big First Half Lifts Mocs Over Royals

Box Score

LAKE WALES – Moccasin freshman Jimmy Oatman netted his first two collegiate goals off the crossbar in the team's 2-0 win over Warner Wednesday night. Oatman is the first Moccasin to have not only a multi-goal game this season, but the first one to record multiple goals in general.

Florida Southern (3-1) came out with the same fire and intensity it did for the first 20 minutes against West Florida and possessed the ball in the attacking third for the majority of the first 11 minutes. The Moccasins had a pair of quality chances to strike first in the 10th minute with sophomore Corey Mills (Wellington, New Zealand), who was denied due to a diving stop by Warner (2-3) goalie Leo Viala, and again in the 11th minute when freshman Kieran Whitehead (Worcester, England) headed the ball off the crossbar from a corner kick.

The Royals would tighten up their defense quickly, and made an adjustment to get better quality of their possessions.  In the 21st minute, they would test sophomore FSC goalkeeper Cole Clingerman (Auburndale, Fla.) with a shot from Anthony Lopez. Clingerman made two saves on the night.

In the 22nd minute, Oatman (La Paz, Bolivia) worked a beautiful give-and-go with sophomore Alek Cosio (Fort Worth, Texas) leading to a rip past Viala. Oatman had been in the game for just three minutes before that strike, and would add his second in the 38th minute again coming off the crossbar.

Oatman would get his opportunity for a hat-trick in the 70th minute after a counter by Whitehead and the Mocs allowed him to shoot at an open net, but Viala cut down the angle forcing Oatman to shoot with the outside of his foot and  try to bend it in. It looked destined to curl just inside the right post, but a sliding save by Scott Monaghan right as the ball was reaching the line would deny him the opportunity for the first FSC hat-trick since 2011.

Florida Southern's focus now turns to Sunshine State Conference foe Barry (3-1-1) who comes to Lakeland on Saturday for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt. Barry knocked FSC out of last season's SSC Tournament in penalty kicks 4-2 in Miami Shores after the two teams were knotted at one.
