Payne Records Double-Double as Mocs Cruise Past Clark Atlanta

LAKELAND – Senior Sydni Payne scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double as Florida Southern defeated Clark Atlanta, 94-80, in the SSC/SIAC Challenge played here Saturday at Jenkins Field House.

Payne shot 8-of-12 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line as the Moccasins remain perfect through the first two games of the season. Florida Southern scored 95 points in yesterday's game marking the first time since the opening two games of the 2008-09 season that the Moccasis have hit for more than 90 points in back-to-back games.

The Moccasins also got career highs from Shaquita Snow with 17 points and Danielle Thomas, who had 11 points. Gianna Vastola contributed 18 points while Mariah Harris added 12 points. Anja Fuchs-Robetin had seven points and seven reounds while Snow also dished out six assists for Florida Southern.

Clark Atlanta (1-1) led 26-17 after the first quarter behind eight points from Mykala Jones and seven from Brandie Robertson. With the Mocs holding a one-point lead, 10-9, Robertson netted five points to spark a 10-2 run as the Panthers jumped to a 19-12 margimn. The Mocs would cut the led to four, 21-17, with 55 seconds remaining, but Clark responded with a three-pointer by Kiyanna Johnson and a layup by Robertson for the lead.

Florida Southern outscored Clark, representing the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, 25-15 in the second quarter as the game was tied six times in the period before Vastola connected on a jumper with :01 left to give FSC a 43-41 halftime lead.

Vastola continued her momentum in the third period scoring 10 points in the opening five minutes and 10 seconds as the Moccasins took an 11-point lead, 60-49, at the 4:50 mark in the third period. The Panthers would cut the lead to six points three times in the period, but would not get any closer.

Snow then scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes as Florida Southern held off Clark 27-21 in the final period. The Moccasins would maintain a double-digit lead for most of the quarter.

Mykala Jones scored a game-high 35 points for Clark Atlanta, marking the most points scored against the Moccasins since North Georgia's Whitney Randolph scored 36 against Florida Southern on Dec. 20, 2009. Jones was 12-of-22 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

The Moccasins shot 56 percent for the game for the second game in a row and converted 20-of-25 free throws. Clark would connect on 51 percent of its shots and was 15-of-20 from the charity stripe.

Florida Southern will open Sunshine State Conference play this Wednesday at home against Barry at 5:30 p.m.
