Mocs Continue Homestand With Hard-Fought 5-4 Setback to Young Harris

LAKELAND - Florida Southern continued its eight match homestand here Wednesday afternoon by suffering a hard-fought 5-4 setback at the hands of Young Harris.

With Wednesday's setback, the Moccasins fell to 2-4 on the season, while Young Harris improved to 4-5 on the season.

Wednesday's contest came down to the final match at No. 6 singles after the 45th-ranked Moccasins tied the match at 4-all following senior Magda Riutort's (Petra, Spain) 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 1 singles spot over YHC's Eva Castiglioni.

At the No. 6 spot, YHC's Carolina Hernandez faced off against Moccasin freshman Cassie Eldredge (Peachtree City, Ga.). Hernandez would post a 6-4 win in the first set and would help her team to the win after posting a 6-0 victory in the second set against Eldredge.

In Wednesday's match, the Mocs opened by taking two of the three doubles matches as FSC won at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots by scores of 8-4 and 8-6, but the Mountain Lions prevented a Moccasin sweep as they won 8-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Trailing 2-1 in the match, YHC tied it up at 2-2 after Maria Puerta defeated freshman Katie Stanford (Lake Worth, Fla.) in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 5 singles spot and then took a 3-2 lead after Laura Sanchez earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles spot over Moccasin freshman Kate Taylor-Doran (Brisbane, Australia).

The Mocs, though, would tie the match 3-all thanks to a win at the No. 2 singles spot by senior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.). Spagnuolo, who improved to 6-2 in singles with the win, defeated YHC's Aimee Dorley in straight sets (6-2, 6-0).

Elin Rundcrantz posted a win at the No. 3 singles spot of FSC freshman Nina Vucevic (Beausoleil, France) to take a 4-3 lead in the match, before Ritort won her fifth singles match of the season to tie things back up.

FSC will continue its eight-match homestand on Thursday, March 12 as they host Ferris State in a 2 p.m. match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
