#27 Wayne State Comes From Behind to Post 5-4 Win Over #45 Florida Southern

LAKELAND – Florida Southern split six singles matches Saturday, getting wins from Miroslava Mensikova, Nina Vucevic, and Magda Riutort, though Wayne State (MI) took two-of-three in doubles to win 5-4 in a battle between two nationally ranked teams.

The Moccasins (2-6, ranked #45) and Warriors (20-1, ranked #27), split the first two doubles matches, with Miroslava and Vucevic winning at the No. 2 position, 8-2. The Moccasins almost got another win too at the top doubles flight, but the nation's 18th-ranked tandem of Anne Li Briand and Yahsha Moore earned a 9-8 win over Riutort and Olivia Spagnuolo.

Florida Southern took a 3-2 lead by winning the first two singles matches that were completed, with Mensikova's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 tying the score, and a 6-0, 6-1 win by Vucevic at No. 3 giving the Mocs the lead. When Riutort won a 3-set decision at the top position, her sixth consecutive victory this spring, the Moccasins were up 4-2, but the Warriors took the final three singles. Liz Souza Ghellere provided the winning margin with her 3-set win over Katie Stanford at No. 6.

Florida Southern's next match will be Tuesday at 3 p.m., when it hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville.
