LAKELAND – Junior Miroslava Mensikova and freshman Nina Vucevic remained undefeated at the No. 2 doubles position with their tightest victory yet, and senior Olivia Spagnuolo won at the No. 2 singles position, but Texas A&M-Kingsville took the points at all of the other spots to defeat Florida Southern 7-2 Tuesday afternoon.
The Javelinas (8-6), who were playing the first of five matches on a trip to central Florida, scored the first two points of the match in doubles before Mensikova and Vucevic pulled out a 9-8 win over Nadia Grlj and Tabata Lua. It improved their doubles record to 5-0, and Tuesday marked the second time they needed to win a ninth game to do it.
Texas A&M-Kingsville won the first three singles matches after that to clinch the overall match, though Spagnuolo got the Moccasins another point with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Grlj at No. 2. It was Spagnuolo's sixth individual win of the season, one behind fellow senior Magda Riutort, who was defeated Tuesday for only the second time this year. Her singles match was decided in a third-set super tie-breaker, with both of her losses in 2015 coming in that fashion.
Florida Southern, now 2-7, will play its next match on Thursday when it hosts 13th-ranked New York Tech at 3 p.m.
