PENSACOLA - Florida Southern opened its five-game road swing in northern Florida with a 5-1 decision over the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a match played at the University of West Florida. The match was shortened to the minimum decisive fifth game as the Mocs will also play a second match tonight at 5:00 against Christian Brothers, also at UWF.
The Mocs doubles team of Magda Riutort and Olivia Spagnuolo combined to post an 8-5 win over UAH's Marleen Gort and Aniek Remmerswaal while FSC's Miroslava Mensikova and Katie Taylor-Doran doubled up Bryant and Cristina Cabanas, 8-4, at number two. The only blemish came for Florida Southern came at number three doubles where the team of Abby Burks and Marta Briega bested the Mocs' Cassie Eldredge and Katie Stanford by a 9-8 tally.
In #1 singles, Riutort, ranked 36th nationally, posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gort while at #2, Spagnuolo downed Cabanas 6-3, 6-1. Mensikova completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Briega.
In addition to tonight's match with Christian Brothers, Florida Southern (3-10) will play at West Florida Saturday at 10 a.m. ET before taking on Valdosta State on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET in a match, also played at West Florida. The road swing comes to a close on Aprl 1 with a game at Embry-Riddle.
