DAYTONA BEACH - Florida Southern concluded a five-match road swing here Wednesday with a 9-0 setback at the hands of NAIA No. 2 ranked Embry-Riddle at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
The Moccasins record fell to 5-12 overall, while Embry-Riddle improved to 10-3 on the season.
In Wednesday's match, ERAU opened by winning all three doubles matches, including picking up an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot over FSC's No. 1 tandem of junior Miroslava Mensikova (Hranice, Czech Republic) and freshman Katie Taylor-Doran (Brisbane, Australia). At the No. 2 spot, freshmen Cassie Eldredge (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Shannon Griffin (Winter Haven, Fla.) fell 8-2 to Kathryn Bock and Paula Ortiz Couder.
Meanwhile, in singles action, the Mocs forced two of the matches into third set tiebreakers, while ERAU won the other three matches in straight sets and picked up a win by default at the No. 6 spot.
Doran forced Couder into a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 2 as Doran won the first set, 6-4, before falling 6-3 in the second set. In the third set, Couder was able to hang on and post a 10-5 win.
The other singles match that went to a third-set tiebreaker was at the No. 3 spot as freshman Katie Stanford (Lake Worth, Fla.) battled Giovanna Tomiotto. Stanford picked up a 6-4 win in the first set, while Tomiotto picked up a 6-2 win in the second set and then colledcted a 10-7 win in the third set tiebreaker.
ERAU clinched the match at the No. 4 singles spot as Bock defeated Eldredge, 6-0, 6-0.
The Mocs will return to action on Tuesday, April 7 as they host Tampa in a 3 p.m. Sunshine State Conference match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
