Mocs Conclude Home Schedule With Victory Over Webber International

LAKELAND - Florida Southern closed out the home portion of its 2015 schedule here Wednesday afternoon by posting a 7-2 victory over Webber International in a non-conference match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

With the victory, the Moccasins snapped a three-match losing skid and improved its record to 5-17 on the season, while WIU fell to 5-10 overall on the season.

Prior to Wednesday's match, the Mocs honored its lone senior, Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) in a prematch ceremony. Garneau was the only returning player from last season's squad.

The Mocs opened Wednesday's match by taking two of the three doubles matches at they picked up an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot and an 8-1 win at the No. 3. FSC had a chance to sweep the doubles point as it No. 1 team of Garneau and sophomore Laurent Mailloux (Montreal, Quebec) held a 5-4 lead, before WIU's tandem of Rodrigo Santibenez and Mislov Colak rallied to score the final four points to post the 8-5 come-from-behind win to prevent the Moccasin sweep.

FSC, though, would take that loss in stride as they would win five of the six matches in singles to earn the victory and close the home season with a win.

"It felt good to be able to go out today and win our final home match of the season for Charles," Moccasin head coach Trey Heath said.

FSC would seal the victory by winning five of the six matches in singles action, with WIU's lone victory coming at the No. 1 spot as Santibenez defeated sophomore Fabian Lundberg (Akersberga, Sweden) in a third set tiebreaker. Lundberg won the first set, 6-4, while Santibenez posted a 7-5 win in the second set and then earned a 10-6 win in the third set tiebreaker.

Four of FSC's five wins in singles came in straight sets, while Mailloux picked up a win in a third set tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot in the line-up. Mailloux won 6-4 in the first set, before falling 6-4 in the second set. In the third set tiebreaker, Mailloux won 10-4.
