PENSACOLA — Sophomore Linnea Skymberg posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mississippi College's Sofia Carrera, for the Moccasins only win on Day One of the USTA/ITA South Region Championships played here Friday at the Roger Scott Tennis Center. Linnea then dropped her second match, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Barry's Emma Onila.
In other Florida Southern singles matches, Sasha Nionova received a first-round bye but was defeated 6-0, 6-2 by Saint Leo's Marine Beugre-Guyot in the second round while Selin Devrimci was topped 6-4, 6-3 by Katharina Tesar of Palm Beach Atlantic. Lorena Rionda dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to Kimmy Twelkev of Barry.
In Saturday's consolation round, Nionova will play Lee's Krista Good; Devrimci takes on Embry-Riddle's Paula Counder, and Rionda will face Yoanna Peshev of Barry. All three matches start at 11 am.
In Doubles Friday, Nionova and Nina Vucevic were defeated 9-7 by the Rollins duo of Fabiana Vitanza and Savanna Fuller while Devrimci and Skymberg fell 8-4 to West Florida's Giovana Patitucci and Valeria Matilla.
