Box Score LAKELAND, FL - West Texas A&M tied things up with a desperation three-pointer at the end of regulation and was able to outlast Florida Southern College women's basketball, 73-63, on Friday at Jenkins Field House. The game was the first of the four-team Terrace Hotel Classic.
The No. 16 Moccasins (6-3) grabbed a three-point lead with 1.4 seconds to go, but the No. 25 Lady Buffs scored at the buzzer to go to overtime, and outscored the Mocs 13-3 in the extra period.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Florida Southern found itself in an early 10-point hole (16-6) late in the first quarter, and trailed by as many as 12 points (18-6) late in the opening period. However, the Moccasins were able to battle back and took their first lead (27-25) on a pair of free throws from Jensen Blassage with 1:55 to go in the first half.
• The Moccasins would score the final two buckets of the half to take a 31-25 lead into the locker room. Florida Southern shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) in the second quarter, and held West Texas A&M to just 2-of-12 from the floor.
• Florida Southern found itself up by as many as six points on several occasions in the third quarter, but the Lady Buffs hung close and were able to take a 48-46 lead with just under seven minutes to play.
• The Mocs were able to jump grab a 56-52 lead with 2:46 to go, and the teams traded jabs over the final minutes until Anja Fuchs-Robetin went to the free-throw line with 1.4 seconds left and put Florida Southern up 60-57.
• After calling a timeout, West Texas A&M was able to advance the ball to mid-court and got the ball in to Maddison Wild, who heaved a prayer towards the basket the slipped through as time expired and sent the game to overtime.
• The momentum of the game-tying shot was all the Lady Buffs would need, as they scored 13 points in overtime and held Florida Southern to just three.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Florida Southern fell to 407-147 all-time at Jenkins Field House, and saw its home winning streak snapped at 15 games. The game was the first-ever meeting between Florida Southern and West Texas A&M.
• The Mocs dropped to 9-14 all-time at the Terrace Hotel Classic, and had their winning streak in the annual tournament snapped at three games.
• Jensen Blassage led the Moccasins with 20 points on 7-of-16 from the floor. She went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and pulled down three rebounds.
• Anja Fuchs-Robetin (13), Giulia Simioni (10), and Gianna Vastola (10) also scored in double figures. Fuchs-Robetin also pulled down 12 rebounds to record her second double-double of the year.
• The Moccasins shot just 33.8 percent (23-of-68) from the floor, and went just 15-of-22 from the free-throw line. West Texas A&M shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) and was 19-of-22 from the charity stripe.
UP NEXT
• Florida Southern will finish off the Terrace Hotel Classic with a 2 p.m. contest against Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday. The Warhawks lost to Eckerd on Friday in the second game of the tournament.
• The Moccasins will also face Claflin at 2 p.m. on Monday in their final game before Christmas. The team returns to Sunshine State Conference play on Dec. 30 against Tampa.
