Mocs Fall to 16th Ranked Flagler, 6-3

LAKELAND – Florida Southern fell 6-3 to #16th-ranked Flagler at home on Wednesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center, in a match that finally got to be played after two rain postponements. The two teams were originally scheduled to meet on Feb. 6, but rains forced that match to be rescheduled for yesterday, but the forecast called for more rain, so the match was moved to today.

Flagler swept all three doubles matches and the first two singles matches for a quick 5-0 lead, clinching the win for the Saints as the club improved to 6-1 on the season. Florida Southern (0-2) won three of the remaining four singles matches for the final 6-3 margin.

Mary Jo Nanti and Kelly Burge won at number one doubles for Flagler, defeating the Moccasins' team of Selin Devrimci and Linnera Skymberg by a 8-5 score while the Saint's team of Thaisa Pereira and Lizanne Jinkertz won out, 8-0, over Cassie Eldredge and Lorena Rionda at number two doubles. The Flagler duo of Kelly Stewart and Laura Kelly posted a 8-4 win at number three over FSC's Carolyn Cureton and Natalija Popovic to complete the doubles sweep.

Burge topped Cureton, 6-0, 6-3, at the number five singles while Stewart downed Skymberg 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match for Flagler.

Popovic picked up her first win as a Moccasin with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Pereira at number four singles while Devrimci beat Nanti, 7-5, 7-5, for FSC's second singles win at number two singles. Flagler's Felicitas Runkel downed Eldredge 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles while Rionda came back to defeat Jinkertz, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 at number three singles in the match's final match-up.
