LAKELAND – Florida Southern battled through a sweep in doubles and then picked up wins in five of the six singles matches to win a second straight match, upsetting 34th-ranked Chestnut Hill here Tuesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Natalija Popovic and Carolyn Cureton got the ball rolling for the 2-2 Moccasins with an 8-2 victory over Chestnut Hill's Hayley Craskey and Louise Charley at number three doubles. Linnea Skymberg and Selin Devrimci then picked up a tough 9-7 win over Iman Williams-Mulesa and Lara Scholtze at number one. The Mocs' duo of Lorena Rionda and Cassie Eldredge then prevailed 9-8 by posting a 7-4 edge in the tiebreaker at number two to complete the sweep.
Popovic opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Charley at number four singles. Axe Owens of Chestnut Hill (2-2) took the win at number five singles when Eldredge had to retire to to injury after a 6-4 first set.
Rionda then clinched the win for Florida Southern with a 6-0, 6-0 win over William-Mulesa at number three singles. The Moccasins then swept the final three singles sets as Cureton posted a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Julia Bellon while Devrimci picked up a win at number two singles when Scholtze had to retire due to an injury after a 7-6 first set. Skymberg completed the Florida Southern victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) over Josso at number one singles.
Florida Southern now hits the road for three games in Texas during Spring Break. The Moccasins open the swing with a March 5 match at St. Edward's in Austin, Texas before playing two matches in San Antonio on March 5 vs. St. Mary's and March 6 against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
