LAKELAND – Florida Southern swept all matches to post a 9-0 win over Bluefield State here Sunday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win was the Moccasins' second in a row and fifth in their last six matches.
Florida Southern, now 5-3, dropped just two points in doubles and eight points overall in singles competition. With the loss, Bluefield State falls to 1-6 on the season.
Carolyn Cureton and Natalija Popovic got the ball rolling for Florida Southern posting an 8-0 win over Marta Briales and Alaina Blankenship at number three doubles while the Mocs' number one duo of Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg also recording a perfect score over Bluefield State's Wendy Rudhu and Tafadzwa Mawisire. FSC' Selin Devrimci and Lorena Rionda completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win against Laura Hernandez and Maria Hernandez at number two.
Nionova picked up Florida Southern's first singles win at number one with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Rudhu while Cureton clinched the Moccasins' win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Blankenship.
Popovic continued the domination for Florida Southern, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win at number five singles over Briales while Skymberg won 6-1, 6-0 over Mawisire at number two.
Rionda then took a 6-2, 6-0 win from Maria Hernadez at number four singles and Devrimci completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number three against Laura Hernandez.
Florida Southern next plays on Tuesday, March 15 at home against Wayne State of Michigan.
