AUSTIN, TX – Florida Southern's Selin Devrimci fought back from a 4-6 loss in set one to win back-to-back sets 6-3 and 6-0 over Ivana Zecevic at number two singles to allow Florida Southern to clinch a 5-4 victory over #40 St. Edwards here Friday at the Strohmeyer Varsity Courts. It was the Moccasins' second straight win over a Top 40 team as FSC downed #34 Chestnut Hill, 8-1, on Tuesday.
The Moccasins, now 3-2, took two of the three doubles sets and split the first four completed singles sets to take a 4-3 lead prior to Devrimci's match-clinching win.
Florida Southern's number one doubles team of Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg topped Anjali Sampath and Marissa Williams by an 8-4 score while St. Edward's number three duo of Zecevic and Laura Galvan tied the match with a 8-4 win over Natalija Popovic and Carolyn Cureton. Devrimci and Lorena Rionda then took a 9-8 (7-5) victory over the Hilltoppers' number two team of Valentina Martinez and Elisa Guillen to give the Moccasins a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
St. Edward's struck first as Martinez posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cassie Eldredge at number five singles. FSC's Rionda picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Williams at three singles while Popovic took a 6-2, 6-4 victory from Galvan at number four to put the Mocs ahead 4-2.
Sampath pulled the Hilltoppers within one set with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over the Mocs' Skymberg at number one singles before Devrimci won her match at number two. St. Edward's took the last singles set as Guillen posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over Cureton at number six singles.
Florida Southern continues its three-game Texas road trip with a match Saturday at 11th-ranked St. Mary's in San Antonio before playing Texas A&M Kingsville on Sunday on the St. Mary's campus.
