SAN ANTONIO, TX – Florida Southern's Lorena Rionda posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Marija Dimitrovska to lift the Moccasins to a 5-4 upset over 43rd-ranked Texas A&M Kingsville in a match played here Sunday at the Annemarie Tennis Center on the campus of St. Mary's University.
The win concludes Florida Southern's three-game Texas road trip and is the third win over a ranked opponent in the last four matches for the Moccasins.
Florida Southern, now 4-3, opened the match by sweeping Texas A&M Kingsville in the doubles competition, beginning with a 9-2 win by Selin Devrimci and Lorenda Rionda at number two doubles over Nadia Grlj and Madi Gomez. Carolyn Cureton and Nataljia Popovic then picked up the Moccasins second win with a 8-5 victory over Erika Larrea and Paula Saenz at number three while Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg defeated Mariaxi Herrera and Marija Dimitrovska, 9-7, at number one.
The Moccasins took a 4-0 lead in the match at Popovic posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Grlj at number three singles. The Javelinas pulled with two, 4-2, with wins at number five as Larrea took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katie Stanford while Saenz picked up a win at number four when Cassie Eldredge had to retired due to injury after falling 7-5 in the the first set.
Rionda then clinched the win with her victory at number two singles. The final two Texas A&M Kingsville wins came at number six as Gomez topped Shannon Griffin and Herrera prevailed in a marathon set getting by Skymberg, 6-4, 1-6, 13-11.
Florida Southern returns home to face Bluefield State on Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
