SSC TENNIS TOURNAMENT CENTRAL WEBSITE
TAMPA – The 2016 Sunshine State Conference men's and women's tennis tournaments will take place April 28-30 at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. In each event, the top six finishing teams in the regular season standings advanced to play in the event, with the winners in each tournament earning a berth in the NCAA Division II postseason tournament.
The women's tournament gets underway on Thursday, April 28 with the top two seeded teams earning a bye the first day while the remaining four seeds will play at 9 a.m. The semifinals are slated for Friday, April 29, at 9 a.m. with the championship scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 30.
Saint Leo (20-1), which won the regular season with a perfect 8-0 league record, is the top seed for the tournament while Nova Southeastern (15-3) is the number two seed after placing second with a 6-2 record.
Lynn (18-3) earned the number three seed with a 6-2 mark and will face sixth-seeded Rollins (12-8) while posted a 3-5 record in SSC action. The winner will play Nova Southeastern. Barry (15-2) earns the fourth-seed (based on a tie-breaker) with a 6-2 record and will play fifth-seeded Florida Southern (12-8) which finished at 4-4 in the SSC. Saint Leo awaits the victor.
In the last Oracle/ITA Collegiate Rankings released on March 23, Barry was the nation's second ranked team while Saint Leo was number three. Lynn came in at #5 while Nova Southeastern was 7th. Florida Tech was 39th, Rolliins 34th, and Florida Southern was 40th. A new poll is to be released on Wednesday.
The Moccasins lost to Barry, 9-0, on April 3 this season. Florida Southern posted wins over Tampa (5-4), Florida Tech (5-4), Eckerd (9-0), and Rollins (6-3). The victory over the Tars locked up a berth in the SSC tournament for the Moccasins. FSC fell to Lynn (9-0), Nova Southeastern (8-1), Saint Leo (9-0)
The Moccasins have won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament a league-high 10 times, the last coming in 1993.
