#2-Ranked Barry Squeezes Past #40 Florida Southern in Doubles Before Singles Sweep Gives Bucs 9-0 Win

MIAMI SHORES – With all three doubles matches decided by either one or two games, 2nd-ranked Barry was able to take a 3-0 lead over #40 Florida Southern before sweeping the singles matches in straight sets for a 9-0 victory Sunday afternoon.

Ana Pain and Sonja Larsen, who are ranked #13 nationally as a doubles team, opened the match for the Buccaneers (11-0, 3-0 Sunshine State Conference) with an 8-6 win over sophomores Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg at No. 1. The Bucs' undefeated and 22nd-ranked team of Zuza Maciejewska and Emma Onila then out-lasted freshmen Selin Devrimci and Lorena Rionda 9-7; and a 9-8 (7-2) win by Judith Bohnenkamp and Barbora Kijasova at No. 3 doubles against freshman Natalija Popovic and sophomore Nina Vucevic made the overall match score 3-0, even though the Moccasins (8-6, 1-2) were only down five total games at that point in the day.

Barry clinched the match with wins at No. 6 and No. 3 singles, where Bohnenkamp and Larsen (#11 in the ITA singles rankings) dropped only one game between them. Bohnenkamp defeated freshman Carolyn Cureton 6-0, 6-0 and Larsen downed Devrimci 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, 8th-ranked Maciejewska was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Skymberg before the No. 5 and No. 4 positions finished with nearly identical scores. Kijasova defeated Popovic 6-4, 6-3 in the fifth slot, and the fourth slot saw Pain, who is ranked #21 nationally, come out ahead of Rionda 6-3, 6-4.

The top singles flight was the last to finish as Onila slipped past Nionova 7-5, 6-4.

Florida Southern will return home for its next match on Thursday (April 7) when it hosts #29 Florida Tech at 3 p.m. That will be the first of six matches in the span of 14 days to end the regular season.
