Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Receiving goals from four different players, including three in the first half, Florida Southern ended up with a split on its 2-game road trip to the Carolinas after beating Coker 4-1 Sunday afternoon. The win improved the Moccasins' record to 2-1, while the Cobras fell to 1-1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida Southern scored its first two goals less than two minutes apart early in the first half. Senior midfielder Hassirou Diakite notched the first one at the 14:40 mark, and freshman forward Florian Thumm had the second one on a penalty kick at 16:30.
- Sophomore defender Luke Bromley extended the Mocs' lead to 3-0 on a header after a corner kick by another sophomore defender, Callum Carsley, in the 40th minute.
- The two sides combined for six shots in the first seven minutes of the second half, and Coker's Michael Ritterbeck had to make saves against Jonathan Radvogin and Jacob Ling-Vannerus. After 10 minutes without any shots, another flurry followed with a total of five in the span of four minutes.
- Coker got on the scoreboard with 10:32 remaining when Aladdin Elfares scored on a penalty kick.
- The Moccasins went back on top by three goals with 3:49 to play on junior Dani Morillo's goal off a rebound. It was one of a career-high six shots for Morillo.
- Thumm and Morillo have each scored two goals in the first three games, while Bromley scored the first of his career. Diakite scored his second career goal, but came to Florida Southern having scored three goals for the University of the District of Columbia.
- Cole Clingerman made four saves for the Moccasins while Ritterbeck had seven for Coker. The Moccasins outshot the Cobras 23-14.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern and Coker were playing each other for only the second time. The Cobras won the first one in Lakeland, 2-1 in overtime to start the 2012 season.
- The last time Florida Southern scored three goals in the first half was in a 4-1 non-conference win over Barry in 2014. The Moccasins led that game 3-1 at the break. The last time they held a 3-goal lead at the break was in 2013 at Eckerd (4-1).
- The Moccasins have already scored 10 goals in their first three games and have out-shot their opponents by a margin of exactly 2-to-1 (58-29).
- There were two penalty kicks in the game (one by each team) after the Moccasins and their opponents combined for only one PK during the entire 2015 season.
- In the Mocs' first and only other meeting with Coker in 2012, current assistant coach Ashley Holmes scored the Florida Southern goal on a penalty kick.
