Tampa's Late Second-Half Goal Decides Game in Favor of Spartans, 1-0

Box Score

LAKELAND – Nastasia Asgedom scored the only goal of the night in the 78th minute and goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard kept Florida Southern from scoring with seven saves as the University of Tampa (3-6, 2-2 Sunshine State Conference) came away with a 1-0 win over the Moccasins (1-3-1, 1-2) at Barnett Field Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Asgedom scored her third goal of the season by receiving a ball played up the middle by Robyn-Anne Whittaker that allowed her to get behind the defense and take it into the box for the shot. Asgedom's first two goals had come on penalty kicks, including a game-winner against Palm Beach Atlantic in Tampa's previous game.
  • The final shot totals saw Tampa with 17 (nine on goal) and Florida Southern with 11 (seven on goal), but the teams combined for just three shots in the first 30 minutes.
  • Florida Southern's first two shots came in the 30th and 31st minutes on long-range attempts by Anna Griessler and Jess Goedde, and both forced Frykgard into leaping saves just under the crossbar.
  • Dominique Cirnigliaro forced another difficult save for Frykgard in the 42nd minute, an opportunity created by the ball work Griessler and Alyssa Barden.
  • Tampa's best chance to score in the first half was ended by Helena Norrstrom in the 40th minute when the Moccasin goalkeeper made a diving save to push one past the left post on a shot taken by Asgedom.
  • After 10 shots between them in the first half, Florida Southern and Tampa took 18 in the second and had five in the first eight minutes after the whistle.
  • After Tampa took the lead with 12:36 remaining, Sheila Ramos nearly tied the score for Florida Southern but had her shot deep inside the box blocked by defender Sarah Raymond. Ramos had another strong shot a little over a minute later that resulted in another save by Frykgard.
  • Ramos and Griessler each had three shots for the Moccasins, but Jess Goedde led the team with four, two of them on goal.
  • Norrstrom made eight saves for the Moccasins.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Wednesday's game was the fifth straight between Florida Southern and Tampa decided by one goal, with three of them going to overtime.
  • The Moccasins were playing their first home game of the season, which marked the latest they have ever played a home opener. Their first three regular season games were cancelled or postponed by weather.
  • The Moccasins were also the last of 264 NCAA Division II teams to play a home game this season.
  • Freshman Alexa Moberley provided a spark to the Florida Southern offense by playing the entire second half as a substitute. The Moccasins also got a strong performance from Cirnigliaro off the bench, as she too played the entire second half and 65 minutes overall.
  • Florida Southern started its usual back line of Goedde, Becca Watson, Juliana Guida, Gaelyn Crowder, but Carly Faust saw extensive action in the second half at outside back with Alyssa Barden and Kendall McNab in the mix inside as well.

UP NEXT

  • After playing their first home game of 2016, the Moccasins will right back on the road Saturday night for a game at Barry University. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.
