Box Score SPRING HILL, ALA. – Florida Southern received a goal early in the second half from sophomore Anna Griessler, and Spring Hill got a goal late in the second half from Gabrielle Burmaster as the Moccasins and Badgers played to a 1-1 tie Friday afternoon. HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Hill took the first three shots of the game, all in the first six minutes, but none of them were on goal. Florida Southern then took the next six, and five of those were on target and forced Badgers' goalkeeper Kayla Beaston into saves. Griessler and Sheila Ramos combined for five of those early shots with the other coming from freshman Kaitlyn Svopa.
- By halftime, the Moccasins had a 12-5 advantage in total shots, and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal, with Griessler and Ramos taking three apiece.
- Florida Southern's goal came on its first shot of the second half seven minutes after the kickoff when Griessler made a solo run from the midfield and sent one into the lower right corner for the Mocs' first goal of the season.
- The 1-0 lead stood until Burmaster scored for the Badgers with 2:46 remaining in regulation, sending a shot from the top of the box into the upper reaches of the net.
- The Mocs had two more shots before the game went to overtime, both by Ramos in the 88th and 90th minutes.
- The Mocs would out-shoot the Badgers 7-3 in the two overtime periods, with Griessler taking the last one inside of 10 seconds remaining. In the game, Florida Southern out-shot Spring Hill 27-14, and forced Beaston into 13 saves. Junior Helena Norrstrom made three saves for Florida Southern.
- Ramos took a career-high eight shots in the game and forced five of those saves, while Griessler took five shots and forced three saves. Senior Margot Chowansky was on target with both of her shots.
- The Moccasins had 27 shots in the game, their most in the last three years.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- With their first two games cancelled due to complications from Hurricane Hermine, the September 9 date was the latest Florida Southern has ever played it season opener. The previous latest start was in 2013 when the Moccasins played their first game on September 6 at Valdosta State.
- The game marked the Florida Southern head coaching debut for Siggi Nagele, but it was his 103rd as a college head coach overall. Nagele is still the all-time wins leader at Eckerd College, where he coached six seasons from 1997-2002 in addition to one season prior to that getting the new program off the ground.
- Though Nagele attempted to give the Moccasins two home games out of the gate, the weather prevented that from happening and it marked the 12th time in the last 13 years they've played at least their first game on the road or at a neutral site.
- The last time the Mocs had played an overtime game to start a season was in 2006 when they lost to Columbus State 1-0. Their only other overtime game in a season opener was in 2005, a 2-2 tie with Christian Brothers (TN).
- Three members of the 2016 recruiting class were in the starting lineup: Svopa, Caitlin Quaempts, and Elanee Otto, with Quaempts playing 95 minutes up front. Another freshman, Alyssa Barden, played 79 minutes in a reserve role.
- The Moccasins were making their first trip to Spring Hill and the city of Mobile. Their only other meeting with the Badgers occurred in 1999, a 3-0 loss in Lakeland.
- The Mocs were playing in Alabama for the first time since 2007 when they started that season with wins over Alabama-Huntsville and Montevallo. The Moccasins are now 4-1-2 all-time in that state and have a 6-game unbeaten streak.
- Spring Hill is a regular member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but plays soccer in the Gulf South Conference since the SIAC does not sponsor that sport.
UP NEXT
- Florida Southern continues its Gulf Coast road trip on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff at the University of West Florida.
