Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Chloe Hamm's goal 52 seconds into the second overtime off a corner kick from Anna Griessler lifted Florida Southern to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday night. Combined with other results from around the Sunshine State Conference, the win clinched a spot in the SSC Tournament for the Moccasins.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sailfish (2-8-1, 1-6-1 Sunshine State Conference) scored the first goal of the night, using a free kick by Maddie McCarty to set up a goal by Kayla Fisher in the seventh minute.
- The Moccasins (8-1-3, 5-1-2 Sunshine State Conference) knotted the game 1-1 in the 19th minute when Alexa Moberley scored from 12 yards out off an assist by Caitlin Quaempts. It was Moberley's fifth goal of the season.
- After more than 81 minutes without another goal, the Moccasins came away with the golden goal in the 101st minute as Griessler's corner kick set up a header by Hamm that gave FSC its second overtime win of the season. It was the third goal of the year for Hamm and her second game-winner.
- Florida Southern held Palm Beach Atlantic to nine shots and only three of those were on goal. After the Sailfish scored on their first one, they did not put another one on target until the 74th minute when Helena Norrstrom made her first save of the night. Her only other save came with 12 seconds remaining in regulation, keeping the game tied at one.
- PBA had the only two shots in the first overtime, and Florida Southern had the only shot of the second extra period.
- Norrstrom had to make only two saves, and Isabelle Granlund made four for PBA, as the Mocs finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots taken.
- Moberley led all players from both teams with three shots, putting two of hers on target. Hamm's game-winning goal came on her only shot of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern is now 7-0-2 in its last nine games, two shy of the school record for longest unbeaten streak set in 2008. The eight wins overall this year are the most for the Moccasins since they went 10-5-4 in 2010. The five conference wins are also the most since that same year when they finished 5-3.
- The Mocs have allowed either one goal or no goals in 10 of their 12 games this year, something they've never done through their first 12 games until this year.
- Florida Southern has played five overtime games this year, and while it's not a school record, it ties the most the Mocs have played in the regular season. They also played five in 2001 (going 2-2-1), and in 2006 (going 3-2). The Mocs are 2-0-3 this year.
- The Moccasins are now 6-7-2 all-time against the Sailfish, and the last four games have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie. The Mocs' last win had been a 3-1 decision in 2011 when PBA was still a Division II independent.
- With Nova Southeastern losing in overtime to Eckerd, and Barry defeating Saint Leo on Saturday, it leaves the top three teams in the SSC standings (Nova, Florida Southern and Barry) within two points of each other with two games remaining. The top two teams receive a first-round bye in the SSC Tournament.
