Box Score AUBURNDALE, FL – Barry scored two goals three minutes apart in the first half, and though an own goal by the Buccaneers early in the second gave Florida Southern life, the Moccasins were unable to score after that and dropped a 2-1 decision that ended their nine-game unbeaten streak.
The game was the last regular season home game for Florida Southern's 10-member senior class (Jess Goedde, Alex Daley, Delaney Riggins, Alex Diamandis, Izzy Loyd, Helena Norrstrom, Juliana Guida, Megan Styron, Madi Colaw and Dominique Cirnigliaro), but despite the loss, the Moccasins (8-2-3, 5-2-2 Sunshine State Conference) still secured a home game for the SSC Tournament quarterfinals next Tuesday after Tampa played to a scoreless draw with Saint Leo. The Moccasins will be seeded either third or fourth pending the outcome of their game at Lynn on Saturday and/or Eckerd's result at Barry in a game being played simultaneously.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Barry (8-2-2, 6-1-2) got on the board 20 minutes into the game following a corner kick. The ball was initially sent into the box by Carissa Sanchez, but Christy Grimshaw played it back to her, and Sanchez drove to the goal for a shot that beat Helena Norrstrom at the near post for a 1-0 lead.
- Sanchez scored the Bucs' second goal as well, converting in the 23rd minute from the right sideline on a ball that looked more like a cross to the back post instead of a shot. Regardless, it was perfectly placed to the top left corner of the goal and out of Norrstrom's reach for her second goal of the night and her third of the season.
- Florida Southern's goal came in the 56th minute when a Barry defender headed a free kick taken by Jess Goedde directly into her own goal. The Mocs, however, had just one shot after that, a good look by Candace Metcalfe in the 81st minute, as the Bucs held on for their sixth straight win.
- Barry out-shot Florida Southern 25-3, but the Moccasins had the first shot of each half. In the first, it was Tatum Albrecht, who forced Melanie Ziegner into her only save of the night. In the second, it was Megan Styron, only a minute in, putting one over the bar.
- Norrstrom made seven saves for Florida Southern, two of them spectacular efforts in the 59th and 77th minutes after the Moccasins had cut the deficit down to one.
- Florida Southern had the final scoring chance of the night when an offside call against Barry with a little over a minute to play gave the ball back to the Moccasins. They got it into the box, but the attack was repelled, and a hand ball against the Moccasins allowed Barry to regain possession and essentially run out the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern's nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2) will go down as the second longest in team history up to this point. It was enough to earn them either the third or fourth seed in next week's SSC Tournament, which will be their highest since 2012 when they were number three.
- Barry and Florida Southern entered the game ranked 1-2 in the SSC in goals against average, with the Buccaneers at 0.61, and the Moccasins at 0.70.
- The own goal was the sixth all-time against Florida Southern, and Goedde has created the last two. She did that once last year in the season finale against Lynn, helping give the Moccasins a 2-0 win.
