WINTER PARK, Fla. – Mathilda Vidgren earned a berth to the singles flight B of the Varner Memorial Invitational as Florida Southern College women's tennis competed at the John Tiedtke Courts on Saturday. Gabby Hesse will play in the third-place match of flight B as every Moccasin earned a win in singles competition on the day. The Moccasins will finish competing at the Varner Memorial Invitational with the conclusion of singles and doubles flights on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Singles flight A saw both Minnie Kim and Laura Vetter go 1-1 on the day to setup an all-FSC fifth-place final for the flight on Sunday. Kim rebounded from a 6-3 first set loss with a 6-1 second set but dropped her opening round match to Kaitlynn Groves of Rollins with a 10-8 tiebreaker before defeating Taylor Selby of Eckerd 6-2, 6-3 in her second-round match. Laura Vetter dropped a 6-4 first set against Palm Beach Atlantic's Yuliia Russu but won the second by a 6-0 score line. Vetter dropped the tiebreaker 10-7, but rebounded against Ola Durzynski of Rollins with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
- In singles flight B Vidgren went 2-0 for the day, defeating Verina Weindl of Palm Beach Atlantic 6-3, 6-1 and Marie Debruyn of Rollins 6-2, 6-4 to earn a berth into the flight B final on Sunday against Georgina Groth of Rollins. Hesse defeated Lili Reichert of Eckerd 6-1, 6-3 before falling to Growth in two 6-0 sets. Hesse will play in the third-place match against Debruyn on Sunday.
