Box Score LAKELAND, FLA. – Anton Lindbom returned to the pitch today for the Florida Southern College men's soccer team, and scored the game winning goal as the Mocs defeated visiting University of Mary, 2-1. In the final non-conference match of the year, the Mocs earned their fourth win, and are now 4-4-5 on the season, while UMary drops to 1-10-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half saw a lot of back and forth action, where neither team really pushed for a strong scoring opportunity
- In the 43rd minute, FSC sophomore Mason Comer had a good look at the goal, but his shot was saved.
- Through the first half, neither team had scored, as each team managed just one shot on goal.
- As the second half opened, Southern played with urgency. Scoring chances were opening up for the home team.
- In the 61st minute, junior Edu Capote finally broke through, and beat the UMary keeper as FSC took a 1-0 lead.
- Fifteen minutes later, senior Anton Lindbom, who has not played in a month, returned to the field and blasted a shot into the lower 90 with what would be the eventual game-winning goal.
- The visitors from Bismarck, N.D., would make things interesting in the final minutes, and scored from right in front of the goal with less than ten minutes remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- In the final non-conference match of the year, several regulars did not play meaningful minutes, if at all.
- For Capote, this was his third goal of the season. He now has scored two of his goals in the last three games.
- Lindbom scored his first career goal for Florida Southern tonight, on just his third shot of the season.
- Junior Martin Wall, who made just his third start of the season, earned an assist on the Capote goal.
- Freshman AJ Pearce played valiantly in goal for Southern, making two saves, while controlling the defense. The keeper is now 2-0-1 in his three starts this season.
- Five starters played the entire 90 minutes tonight: freshman Ryan Duffey, sophomore Will Draper, freshman Gio Saavedra, freshman Daniel Miranda, and Pearce.
- Also earning the start today was Jack Duffey, who along with his twin Ryan Duffey, celebrated their birthday today.
