Ice Hockey Shuts Out Florida Tech for Third Straight Win

LAKELAND, Fla. - Christian Nichols found the back of the net twice as Florida Southern College club men's ice hockey team shutout Florida Tech in a 4-0 victory at the Lakeland Ice Arena on Saturday night. The win extends the Moccasins win streak to three, as the team moves to 3-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Mocs opened up the game with a fury of shots, outshooting the Panthers 17-7 in the first frame. Nichols was the lone Moc to find the netting in the first period, scoring on a power play with 11:41 left in the period. 

  • Play became sloppy after the first intermission, as both teams had players sent to the box a combined 10 times in the middle frame. In total, there were 19 penalties issued in the game. 

  • Jake Comisar found the back of the net early in the second frame, squeezing the puck between the pipes just 51 seconds after the puck dropped. Southern continued to outshoot Tech in the second period, 14 to 9. 

  • Play slowed down at the start of the third period, but picked up as the clock wound down. Off an assist by Ethan Oliva, Jamie Calhoun made it 3-0 for the Mocs with 3:28 left in the game before Nichols, assisted by John Koch, put in his second of the game with 19 seconds left. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Logan Cody's 19 saves and 0 goal allowed resulted in the teams first career shutout. The four goal victory is also the largest goal differential in program history. 

  • Florida Southern outshot Florida Tech by 30, 49-19, including a game-high 18 shots in the final frame. 

  • Ryley Pickrem led the team in the penalty box, recording four of the team's 10 penalties.

UP NEXT

  • The Mocs are set to play twice in the month of November. Florida Southern will play the Warriors on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. and East Florida State on Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. Both games will be played at the Lakeland Ice Arena.
