CHS D3 Playoffs Semifinals: #2 Mocs and #1 Canes Advance to the Championship

LAKELAND, Fla. - Day 2 of the College Hockey South D3 Championship, the Pictsweet Cup, ends late Saturday night at Lakeland Ice Arena with several high-intensity matches. The top-seeded Hurricanes and second-seeded Moccasins advanced to the championship match. Florida Southern defeated Kennesaw State 6-4, setting them up for the championship game against Miami at 12:30 pm on Feb. 25

Before the first puck drop of the day, College Hockey South announced the D3 awards where Gilles Richard was named the D3 Coach of the Year while the Moccasins' Will Marshall was tabbed the MVP.

# 2 Florida Southern def. #3 Kennesaw State, 6-4
The Mocs' offense was once again led by Michael Stoll, whose shot hit the back of the net twice throughout the game. Paul Rigolini, Keaton Clay, Matthew Fromer, and Will Marshall all beat the goalie and scored a point for Florida Southern in the increasingly physical match. Michael Woll scored the game-winning goal in the third frame, assisted by Paul Rigolini.

Owen Foster, John Lakly, Aaron Montgomery, and Christopher Scott scored a goal for KSU, putting up a good fight against Florida Southern's defense.

Jason Cribbs once again starred in the net, making several impressive saves for the match.

#7 Florida State def. #8 Florida, 6-4
In the first game of the day, we saw the Noles battle it out with the Gators in a physical match that had no less than 2 penalties called each frame. Florida State emerged victorious 6-4 against Florida. Florida State's offense was a team effort between players Charlie Lakis, Eddie Zucker, Braxton Lucero, Brady Walsh, Johnny Russenberger, and James McGovern – netting a goal for the eventual victory. Russenberger scored the game-winning goal in the second frame, putting the Noles in seventh place.

#5 Alabama def. #6 Florida Tech, 10-3
Alabama played Florida Tech for the second game on today's lineup. The Tide swept over the Panthers in a decisive 10-3 victory, securing fifth place for the Crimson Tide. Alabama's offense was spearheaded by Kellen McGarry, netting an impressive 4 goals against Florida Tech. Following McGarry was Connor Plamondon with 2 goals.  Gabe Poland, Brendan Vatz, Rocco McCullen, and Rhys Gulotta all scored one goal apiece for the winning score of ten goals, with Gabe Poland netting the game-winning goal.

#1 Miami def. #5 Tennessee, 5-1
In the last game of the night, the Canes duked it out with the Vols to see who would advance to the finals. Miami emerged victorious with Elian Estulin spearheading the offense, scoring 2 goals. Thomas Ferry II, Adam Berg, and Mathieu Schneider all found the back of the net, each scoring to contribute to the winning score. Ferry scored the game-winning goal against Tennessee in the second frame.

Sunday will see two games with the first being the third-place match between #5 Tennessee and #3 Kennesaw State with the puck dropping at 10 a.m. Afterward, #2 Mocs will face off against #1 Hurricanes in the championship game with a 12:30 p.m. start time.
