CHS D3 Championship: Canes Blank Mocs to Win the Pictsweet Cup

LAKELAND, Fla. - The College Hockey South D3 Championship bracket, the Pictsweet Cup, ended Sunday afternoon with an explosive match between #2 Florida Southern and #1 Miami, ending 4-0 with the Hurricanes winning the cup on the ice at Lakeland Ice Arena.

#1 Miami def. #2 Florida Southern
The Moccasins' offense was hard-pressed to control the puck, facing pressure whenever they came into possession. Jason Cribbs started in the net for the championship, and despite many excellent saves, he was slowly overwhelmed by a relentless offense from the Canes. Cribbs blocked a total of 25 shots from Miami throughout the game.

Mathieu Schneider led the offense for the Canes, finding the back of the net twice in the third period. Christopher Kourgelis and Thomas Ferry II followed close behind, with both contributing an additional goal toward the winning score.

The two teams locked horns on the ice, wrestling for the upper hand from the moment the puck hit the ice. The Hurricanes' Christopher Kourgelis and Thomas Ferry II scored the first two goals of the game, with Kourgelis getting that game-winning goal on the Mocs. However, Florida Southern rallied despite the initial setback and the fight was on. The first frame ended with a score of 0-2 with Miami holding the lead.

The second frame continued the slug match with both teams getting increasingly physical with tempers running high. Neither team gained any ground and continued into the final frame with no new goals on the board.

The third and final frame was an explosive conclusion to the championship, with the Mocs trying to gain ground and the Canes trying to wait out the clock. Miami managed to find the back of the net for a lead of 3 goals. In the last five minutes of the game, Florida Southern attempts a full offensive with an undefended goal, but the gamble doesn't pay off as the Canes use the opportunity to score a fourth goal.

The buzzer signaled the end of the match with Miami winning the Pictsweet Cup.

#5 Tennessee def. #3 Kennesaw State
Sunday morning saw a minor upset in the third-place matchup as #5 Tennessee defeated #3 Kennesaw State. Ian Tulk, Luke Schoenbrunn, and Dillon Segal each scored for Tennessee with Schoenbrunn making the game-winning shot in the third quarter. The Vols and the Owls both scored within the first ten minutes and proceeded to spend most of the match tied up 1-1. The Owls blinked first, though, and the Vols scored an additional 2 goals in the final ten minutes of the game earning them both the victory and third place.
