Women's Hoops Comes Up Short Against Lynn

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College women's basketball ran into a hot-shooting opponent as it suffered a 77-67 loss to Lynn on Saturday night at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (5-5, 3-1 SSC) dropped their first Sunshine State Conference contest of the season as the Fighting Knights (6-4, 3-1) earned their fourth-straight win.

Lynn shot an incredible 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc to snap an 11-game losing streak to the Mocs and pick up their first win in Lakeland since 2013. Julia Jenike led Southern with 18 points, but the Moccasins never really found their offensive rhythm as they were held to just 35.7 percent (25-of-70).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 1st Quarter | Florida Southern was able to get off to a solid start in the first quarter as it grabbed an early 10-5 lead on Jenike's jumper with seven minutes to play in the first. A three-pointer from Katerina Pazzaglia-Khomenko with 5:10 on the clock gave Southern an eight-point lead (17-9) and the Moccasins led 21-14 after the first period.
  • 2nd Quarter | The Mocs would go into an offensive funk in the second quarter as Lynn got hot from beyond the arc. The Fighting Knights started the quarter on an 11-4 run to tie things up at 25-25 on a Sarah Baer layup at the 4:55 mark. After Florida Southern went back up by four (29-25) with just under three minutes to play, Lynn would hit three from long range in the final two and a half minutes to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
  • 3rd Quarter | Lynn was able to extend its lead to as many as 10 points (46-36) when Loie Webb connected from deep with 5:58 left in the third. The Mocs battled back with a 15-4 run over the next three and a half minutes to jump in front, 51-50, on Aubrey Burke's layup at the 2:34 mark. The Fighting Knights hit the final bucket of the quarter to take a one-point lead (52-51) into the fourth.
  • 4th Quarter | The Fighting Knights were able to continue their momentum into the early part of the fourth quarter as the held the Mocs without a point until Kaja Wroblewska nailed a jumper with 5:07 to go in the game. During the Florida Southern scoring drought, Lynn was able to push its lead to 58-51 before the Wroblewska bucket. The slow start in the fourth proved to be the nail in the coffin for the Moccasins, who were never really able to recover as Lynn picked up its fourth win in a row and moved into a second-place tie in the conference standings.
