MACON, Ga. - Florida Southern College women's tennis competed in the first day of action at the Mercer Gridirion Classic, with three Moccasins advancing to the round of 16 in singles flights and one Moccasin pairing advancing to a doubles round of 16 fixture. The tournament, which features numerous Division I opponents, continues today with consolation bracket action for the Mocs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Three Moccasins advanced to the round of 16 in Flight A of the singles bracket, while Gabby Hesse received a first-round bye in Flight B of the singles bracket. Hesse fell to Maria Plaksina of Belmont (6-2, 6-3) but will continue in the consolation bracket.
- Minnie Kim defeated Juliana Castellanos of Kennesaw State in two 6-3 sets. Kim earned a 6-3 first-set win over Chunxi Guo of Troy but lost the match after Guo earned two 6-2 set wins.
- Lola Asis won her opening match 6-0, 6-4 over Maria Popoova from Alabama State but fell 6-3, 6-0 to Somer Henry of Belmont in the round of 16.
- Laura Vetter earned her first victory as a Moccasin, recovering from a 5-7 first set with 6-3, 6-2 second and third set wins over Urska Velec from Alabama State. Vetter fell in two 6-3 sets to Maeva Roquebert of Mercer.
- Magda Stepnik and Mathilda Vidgren were the sole doubles match winners of the day for Mocs with a 6-2 in over Anastasiia Khokhlova and Tijana Svitlica of Troy, but fell in a tightly-contested 7-6 match against Mary Weston Courville and Lauren Rich of Mercer
