LAKELAND, FLA. - Florida Southern College baseball opens the 2020 season today as it hosts West Florida for a three-game weekend series at Henley Field. The No. 30 Moccasins have faced off against the No. 22 Argonauts in an opening series for eight-straight seasons.
Southern brings back several key players in 2020, including all-America candidates Jacob Teter and Zach Scott at the corner infield spots. Florida Southern's pitching staff, which suffered the most from injury last year, is expected to be much improved with a fully healthy battery of arms. Several key newcomers have arrived during the offseason in the form of both transfers and high-school prospects. One of those is Hunter Fitz-Gerald, who was a 33rd round selection of the Colorado Rockies in the 2019 MLB Draft.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America honored three Moccasin student-athletes in the preseason as Scott was named to Division II Preseason All-South Region First Team, Teter as a South Region Player to Watch and Ben Baggett as a South Region Newcomer to Watch.
The NCBWA gave the Moccasins a No. 5 ranking in the South Region to start the season and the Mocs received votes in the organization's preseason poll. The Mocs were ranked No. 30 by Collegiate Baseball in December.
