Men's Tennis Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker to No. 3 Argonauts

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College men's tennis nearly pulled off another stunning upset but fell just short as they lost 4-3 to West Florida on Monday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Moccasins (1-1) dropped the doubles point to the No. 3 Argonauts (1-1) in the third flight by just two games and had four 6-4 sets go against them in singles play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Andres Cabezas and Erik Nordblom fell in their No. 1 doubles flight by a 6-2 scoreline, while the Pham twins won a 6-4 contest over Adam Svensson and Gabriel Nery in the No. 2 flight. The doubles point came down to the third flight, where Valentin Hertweck and Pablo Salamanca came back from 5-3 to tie at five, but inevitably fell 7-5 to Juan Motta and Pedro Cordeiro.
  • West Florida took a 3-0 lead after the No. 11 player in the nation Serdar Bojadiev defeated Valentin Hertweck 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 flight and Nicholas Lecoutre took two 6-4 sets over Erik Nordblom in the No. 2 flight.
  • Cabezas earned one back with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the No. 30 in the nation Juan Cabrera in the No. 4 flight, but West Florida clinched the match after Motta won 6-4, 6-3 over Brandon Pham in the No. 1 flight.
  • The Moccasins made the match 4-3 after Oscar Sohl won two hotly contested, 7-5 and 6-4 sets over Svensson in the No. 5 flight and Chase Martin took a 6-3, 7-6 victory with a 7-4 tiebreaker in the second set over Nery.
