TAMPA, Fla. - Florida Southern College women's tennis cruised into the win column on Wednesday afternoon, earning a 5-2 win over Tampa at the Naimoli & Young Complex. The No. 18 Moccasins (1-3, 1-1 SSC) won three comeback singles flights against the Spartans (2-4, 0-3 SSC) to guarantee the first conference win of the season for Southern.
"They played with great effort and tremendous heart," head coach Trish Riddell said. "It was a hard-fought and well-deserved win by the entire team."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Moccasins cruised early in doubles as Mathilda Vidgren and Lola Asis blanked Lilley Nice and Vanina Iordanova in the No. 3 flight, 6-0. Tampa retaliated with a 6-4 win in the No. 1 flight, but the Mocs had the last word as Laura Vetter and Magda Stepnik won a hotly-contested 7-5 set over Corbin Dorsey and Cheyanne Brooks to lock up the doubles point in favor of the Mocs.
- Savannah Williams tied the match at one as she won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 flight, but the Mocs responded with a 6-1, 6-2 showing from Asis in the No. 6 flight against Nicoline Palmgren.
- Ekaterina Grib once again tied the match with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Vetter in the No. 1 flight, but Southern would dominate the match from there forward as Isabella Bolivar triumphed 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth flight and Minnie Kim clinched match point with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback in the No. 4 flight in her season debut.
