LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College Softball take down visiting Bloomsburg University in mid-week doubleheader sweep. The Mocs opened up play with a 3-1 win in game one while
Kayla Hickey pitched a shutout in six innings of play in game two with an 8-0 win on Chris Bellotto field Tuesday afternoon.
Southern capitalized on their hitting with a new season-high of 14 hits in game two. The Mocs were led by freshman
Mariah Rodriguez going a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate in game two, with two runs, and two RBIs.
With the sweep, the Mocs improve to 9-12 overall.
Florida Southern 3, Bloomsburg 1
In the second inning, the bats came alive for both teams as the Huskies attacked first scoring on a Moccasins error for a short-lived 1-0 lead. FSC answered back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single from
Myah Moy. Moy scored to tie the game with an RBI triple down the left-field line from
Maddi Conner.
Skyler Ralstin reached on a walk and moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice and advanced home on a stolen base to take the lead for FSC at 2-1.
Conner scored in the bottom of the fourth off another Bloomsburg error giving the Mocs the momentum they needed to take game one.
Florida Southern 8, Bloomsburg 0 - 6 innings
FSC scored early and often as they run-ruled the Huskies in game two with 14 hits for the Mocs and kept Bloomsburg to just three hits in an 8-0 victory.
Senior,
Jadin Dewith got game two rolling for Southern with her speed as she bunted for a single. Dewith moved around the bases, scoring on an error from the second baseman to give the Mocs an early 1-0 lead.
Florida Southern added three insurance runs in the bottom of the second from a Ralstin double, a single from M. Rodriguez, and another single from Dewith to make it a 4-0 inning after just two innings.
The game remained at 4-0 until the bottom of the fourth when
Destiny Colgate stepped to the plate for an RBI single to score Dewith. FSC followed up with an RBI single to right-center field from Moy to bring the Mocs lead up to 6 runs.
Kelsey Peck brought in a runner with a double to left field in the bottom of the seventh as the Huskies looked to cut the Mocs lead down in the top of the seventh. However, it was a little too late for the Huskies as M. Rodriguez closed out the game with another RBI single to second base scoring Moy on the hit to finish out the game with an 8-0 win in six innings.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- In-game one, the Mocs were led by Conner going 2-for-3 from the plate, bringing in one run.
- In the circle, Lane Edgington received the nod pitching a complete game allowing just one run on four hits.
- In game two, M. Rodriguez led the Mocs with a perfect day from the plate with four hits.
- Dewith, Colgate, and Kiki Morris each followed with two hits apiece, and Dewith and Colgate both brought in a runner.
- Hickey went six innings in game two moving to 2-2 on the season, just behind Edgington with a 3-1 record. Both pitchers had two strikeouts a piece on the day.

Southern jumps right back into Sunshine State Conference action on Friday with a single game at Eckerd. The first pitch is set for 6:00 pm in St. Petersburg. The Mocs and Tritons will close out their series on Saturday with a doubleheader.
