Mocs Earn Non-Conference Sweep Over West Georgia

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team earned a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon when the Mocs swept the University of West Georgia on Chris Bellotto Field. FSC dominated in game one 10-3, before rallying in game two for a 2-1 win. 
 
With the wins, Southern improves to 12-14 on the year, while West Georgia falls to 11-18 overall. 
 
Despite West Georgia scoring first in each of the games, Florida Southern had a total of 18 hits on the day, 13 hits in game one, and just five in the second game. The Wolves outhit the Mocs in the second game with eight they only had six in the first with three runs scored in the first. 
 
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 10, WEST GEORGIA 3 
 
West Georgia attacked first in the top of the first, scoring a total of three runs to start off the game. FSC answered back with an RBI single from Maddi Conner that scored Destiny Colgate which cut the Wolves lead down to 3-1.
 
In the bottom of the second leadoff Victoria Rodriguez hit a double down the right-field line putting herself into scoring position. Kiki Morris then bunted, advancing Rodriguez to third who later scored the Mocs their second run on a wild pitch. With Jadin Dewith on third, Colgate singled to third scoring Dewith to tie the game at 3-3.
 
Leading off the top of the third FSC hit back-to-back singles to put Southern into scoring position with the go-ahead run at second base. Conner scored fourth on a fielder's choice as the Mocs took the lead 4-3 and never looked back. Kelsey Peck base hit into right-center field, two runs scored by Peck's RBI single, putting the Mocs up by three. 
 
In the bottom of the fourth Conner singled, by bunting and advanced Myah Moy into scoring position. Skyler Ralstin advanced the play with a single followed by V. Rodriguez doubled to left field, scoring two runs and making it 8-3. With still no outs and runners at third and first, Morris hit a 2-run RBI double that closed out the Mocs runs as FSC took game one 10-3. 
 
In the circle, Mel Rogers got the win to move to 2-4 on the season as she pitched seven innings allowing no runs on four hits while striking out three. 
 
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, WEST GEORGIA 1
 
Just like the first game West Georgia scored first this time in the top of the second off an RBI double to left-center field. 
 
Just like game one for the Mocs they answered back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Morris to score Mariah Rodriguez and tie the game. 
 
The tied game lasted until the bottom of the third when Conner hit a triple to deep center field that allowed Colgate to score and take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Wolves got runners in scoring position several times but the pitching staff and Mocs defense held strong to come away with a sweep and take game two 2-1. 
 
Kayla Hickey received the win to now move to 3-3 from the circle while Cat Buckner earned her first save as both struck out two batters.

Florida Southern will jump back into Sunshine State Conference play on Friday as they travel to take on Florida Tech in a single game. The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
