Mocs Minutes: Softball and Men's Tennis Compete at Home

  • Florida Southern men's track will head north to Tennessee for the second time this season Friday and Saturday to compete in the Flames Invitational hosted by Lee University.
  • The men will compete in the 5000m, 10000m and 3000m steeplechase over the two-day event. The Mocs missed out on day two of the Spikes Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle last weekend due to inclement weather. Friday evening prior to the bad weather, graduate student Joshua Wagner posted the fourth fastest 1500m time in program history while taking third overall. Junior Alex Guy came across fifth in the event with the 12th fastest time in program history.
  • Wagner will compete in the 5000m Friday night while Guy, Mason Jones, Bryson Yamnitz and Owen Allen will all compete in the 10000m. On Saturday, Mitchell Kozik and Brady Zimmerman will attack the 3000m steeplechase.
  • Florida Southern women's track heads to Lee University for the second time this season and will compete in the 5000m, 10000m and 3000m steeplechase over the two-day event.
  • Sophomore Ellie Fluman led the Mocs last weekend at the Spikes Classic as she posted the fourth fastest 5000m time in program history while taking 11th overall at the event. Sophomore Jinia Johnson took 14th overall but her time of 4:51.99 ranked as the 11th fastest time in program history. Sophomore Capri Procopio was the lone Moc in action on Saturday as she beat the bad weather and finished seventh in the 400m with the ninth fastest time in the event in program history.
  • Julia Svartstrom, Emma Mussante and Marisa Kortright will all compete in the 5000m Friday night while Fluman will take to the track late for the 10000m event. Saturday morning, Johnson will compete in the second heat of the 10000m while Carolina Titus will take part in the 3000m steeplechase.

  • Florida Southern travels to West Palm Beach after a winning series against then No. 9 Rollins College this past weekend. The Mocs lost the first game on Friday night but rallied for back-to-back wins on Sunday for the doubleheaders weep and series win. A leadoff, first pitch homer by Jeff Liqouri started the Mocs with a 1-0 lead in game one of the doubleheader, which Duncan Hunter stretched the lead 2-0 with a solo homer of his own. The Tars would score one run, but not enough as Mocs won 2-1 in the first game. A great job in game two by Florida Southern created another 2-1 lead with Mocs holding on for series win.
  • With their homers this past weekend, Liquori and Hunter remain second and third, respectively, in the conference with homers hit as Liquori has 12 and Hunter with nine. Liqouri sits in second in the conference in slugging percentage and OPS, with Nathan Chevalier to six in the conference for batting average, with .392 on the season.
  • On the mound, the Mocs had a great weekend of pitching with Dawson Lane named SSC Pitcher of the Week, and NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week honors after his winning performance in game one of the Sunday doubleheader. Lane had a career-high seven strikeouts in six innings pitched. Aric McAtee had a great win for game one doubleheader, with Collin Camarigg for the save.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic host Florida Southern and looking for a winning series as they've been looking for their first conference series win this season. The Sailfish faced tough competition as they lost their series 2-1 against Barry last weekend, as well as a midweek match against Nova Southeastern. PBA's only win against Barry was a 10-6 victory built in the top of the eighth where they scored five runs, including a three RBI double by Roper.
  • The Sailfish are led by Sean Houck, with boasts a .323 batting average, including an SSC second-best 11 doubles so far this season. Jiovel Lantigua is right behind with a .296 average, with Matty Warren in third with .273. On the Mound, the Sailfish have Mike Entenza leading the team with 43.0 innings pitched and 4.60 ERA. As a team, PBA averages 5.61 ERA and .295 opposing batting average.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs have a 30-9 overall record against the Sailfish, including a 10-1 win last time out on March 7th of last year. In that win, the Mocs started the first inning with three straight RBI walks and early lead with a two-run homer by Vaun Brown for insurance.

  • Florida Southern is in the mist of their 2022 season as they hosted Rollins College last weekend for a three game series. The Mocs struggled in the opener, but quickly bounced back in back-to-back extra inning games to the Tars. First they went 8-innings winning 4-3, but dropped the final game of the series in 12-innings 4-5.
  • In conference play the Mocs added a third win to their SSC resume in an extra inning 4-3 win against Rollins over the weekend. FSC currently sits at the bottom of the conference but is sixth in batting average with a .260 and tied for fifth with 110 hits along with Nova Southeastern and Rollins. FSC and Rollins are at the top of the conference with at bats (50), putouts (36), and assists (16).
  • On the season, freshman Destiny Colgate is in the top 10 in the conference for batting with .380. Along with Colgate, senior Jadin Dewith is in the top of the SSC with hits (18) and Colgate right ahead tied for fourth with 19 hits. Along with Colgate and Dewith, Myah Moy remains in the top for FSC with a .371 batting average bringing in 18 runners, with four doubles, and 33 hits in 89 at bats. In the circle, Cat Buckner is the only Moc with two wins and no losses pitching 14.1 innings. Mel Rogers holds the most strikeouts; striking out 41 batters in three complete games for a 3-5 overall record and two saves.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic is coming off a 2-1 series win over Barry as the two wins over the Bucs were shutouts first 1-0 in the opener and later 4-0 in the series finale. The Sailfish is sitting in seventh in the conference with an 11-10 record.
  • In the SSC, the Sailfish are the top team in the standings with a .277 batting average. Palm Beach has brought in 78 runners to be the first in the conference and second with 11 home runs just behind Rollins. The top hitter for the Sailfish is Katherine Budnovich sitting two spots behind Colgate at ninth in hitting, supporting a .366 average.
  • On the season, Budnovich remains the top overall for PBA batting a .363 overall for the season with 102 at bats, with 37 hits and 17 runs. She also has five homers on the season, bringing in 19 runners in 30 games played. In the circle, the Sailfish are led by Cambria Arturo who is 6-7 pitching 8 complete games and striking out 47 batters.
  • History FSC won the last meeting against PBA with a 3-0 decision, but is down overall with 18 wins in 44 games.

  • No. 5 Florida Southern travels to Winter Park for a top-10 matchup with No. 9 Rollins after the Moccasins outlasted No. 15 Tampa Wednesday 23-19. In the win, a pair of Mocs scored five goals in Brenna Smith and Madison Tare. Smith added two assists to finish with a team-best seven points while Abby McFerren tallied six assists and had one goal to tie for the lead with seven points.
  • On the year, Abby McFerren is first on the team in points (43), first in assists (21) and third in goals scored (22). Hailey Daleo is the team leader through 10 games with 29 goals and is second in points (40).
  • In goal, Patricia Werker is 5-1 after her win Wednesday night with 341:37 minutes of action with 57 saves on 259 shots faced. Brittany Iamele is 4-0 on the year in 201:22 minutes with 24 saves on 65 shots faced.
  • No. 9 Rollins remains perfect after escaping No. 12 Embry-Riddle 11-10 Wednesday on the road. Caroline Gastonguay was the leader on offense with four goals while Liz Fahey and Charlotte Gastonguay each scored two goals.
  • On the year, Caroline Gastonguay is the leader in points (52), goals (29), and assists (23) while younger sister Charlotte Gastonguay is second in points (31) and third in goals scored (23).
  • In goal, Rachel Schlesinger has seen 628:40 of the 658:40 minutes between the pipes with 57 saves on 174 shots faced and is 10-0 on the year.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern holds a 9-6 record all-time against Rollins and will be the 12th straight matchup with both programs represented inside the top-15 of the ILWomen/IWLCA DII Poll. It's the second meeting with Florida Southern as the fifth-ranked program in the country while Rollins was ranked the ninth team in the country with The Moccasins winning 15-8 at home in March 2015. The series is even at 2-2 win played in Winter Park.

  • #12 Florida Southern enters Saturday's contest having won five-straight games dating back to March 14 when the Mocs defeated then-top-ranked Le Moyne. The Moccasins have a chance to make history Saturday earning their second win over a No. 1 ranked team in program history.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the team in points and assists while ranking second in goals. He has 33 goals, 39 assists and 72 points through 12 games this season. He currently ranks first in the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game (3.25), second in points per game (6.00) and sixth in goals per game (2.75). Junior Sean Nolan leads the team in goals with 39 while ranking third in the conference in goals per game with 3.25.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to give the Mocs an advantage at the X as he has won 66.7 percent of his faceoffs (220-330) this season. He currently has 126 ground balls this season and ranks second in the SSC in ground balls per game (10.50) while leading the conference in face off winning percentage (.667).
  • The fifth-year senior continues to re-write the Florida Southern record book as he holds both the career records for ground balls (398) and faceoffs won (782). He has also already broken the single season ground balls record in 2022 with his 126. He surpassed Dan Krispinsky (2011-14) who had 90 ground balls during the 2013 season. He also just recently set the single season record for faceoffs won with 220 so far in 2022. Andrew Fisher (2014-15) held the previous mark of 199 faceoffs won in 2015.
  • In goal for the Mocs, junior Maxwell Freestone has improved to 7-2 on the season following the victory over Saint Leo on the road. Freestone has made 99 saves this season and has an 11.07 goals against average with a .518 saves percentage. He currently ranks fourth in the SSC in GAA and third in saves percentage.
  • Freestone earned his second SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor this past Monday for his performance against Embry-Riddle. He made 15 saves in the victory while picking up a team-high six ground balls and causing one turnover. Atlas was named to the USILA DII National Team of the Week for his efforts versus Embry-Riddle where he scored five goals and handed out five assists for a 10-point effort.
  • The Mocs have several high rankings in the NCAA Division II men's lacrosse statistics. As a team, the Mocs lead the country in total assists (122) and total points (317) while ranking fourth in ground balls (485) and fifth in assists per game (10.17), ground balls per game (40.42) and points per game (26.42). They also have top-10 marks in caused turnovers per game (6th, 12.33), opponent clear percentage (8th, 0.736), scoring offense (8th, 16.25), clearing percentage (9th, 0.878) and faceoff winning percentage (9th, 0.655). Individually, Jeff Atlas and Kevin Horwitz hold top-five rankings. Atlas ranks fourth in assists per game (3.25) and points per game (6.00) while Horwitz ranks fifth in ground balls per game (10.50).
  • #1 Tampa is a perfect 11-0 this season with nine of those 11 wins coming against ranked opponents including a 16-5 victory over then-20th ranked Florida Southern in Lakeland early in the season. The Spartans also have an 11-8 victory over Lindenwood, a team the Mocs fell to 13-9 at home.
  • Senior Luke McAnaney leads the Spartans in goals (25) and points (37) this season while ranking second in assists (12). Junior Harry Kilkowski leads the team in assists (21) while ranking second in points (35). Senior attackers Colin White and Own Miller each have 20-plus goals on the year as well. White led the Spartans with six points in the first meeting with the Mocs as he had three goals and three assists. Kilkowski led the squad with five assists in that victory as well. In goal, the Spartans have one of the top goalkeepers in the entire country in junior Blake Ulmer who boasts a 7.89 goals against average and a 67.1 saves percentage. He leads all of DII in GAA and save percentage while ranking fifth in saves per game (15.18). He stopped 29 Florida Southern shots on goal in the first meeting between the two squads. At the 'X' junior Hunter Turner holds down the spot winning 129 of his 218 faceoffs (.592). He won just four of 13 against the Mocs in the first meeting.
  • HISTORY: Saturday will mark the 17th meeting between the Spartans and Moccasins on the lacrosse field. The Mocs have just one win all-time against Tampa with the Spartans holding a 15-1 lead in the series. The Mocs lone win in the series came on the road in 2012 as FSC defeated UT 11-7 in the SSC Tournament in the second-ever meeting between the two teams. Tampa has won 14-straight over the Mocs.

  • Florida Southern is having a spectacular season thus far as the Mocs honored the seniors a couple of weekends during their final home tri-match of the season. The Mocs took four matches from Eckerd over the weekend before falling to Palm Beach. The No. 1 seed of Erica Ronda/ Kennedy Mathews defeated the Tritons in straight sets of 21-14. The No.2 pair of Celia-Rae Greco and Haley Goodrich went to three sets winning 22-24, 21-15, 16-14, followed by No. 3 pair Sarah Crocker and Olivia D'Agostino in 21-11 straight sets. The No. 5 pair of Hayley St. Martin and Curry Ward saw their first loss this season.
  • On the season, the pair of Martin and Ward led the way with 18 total wins followed by Crocker and D'Agostino with 17, Knoop and Jones with 12.
  • Eckerd The Tritions last match was against the falling 1-4, so Eckerd is looking to bounce back after having a weekend off. The only win for the Tritons was against Stevenson when they won 3-2 on March 13. Eckerd earned a win against FSC two weekends ago in the No. 4 pairings as Martina Melicherova and Nicki Bechtold defeated Knoop and Jones 10-21, 21-17, and 15-17.

  • Florida Southern looks to keep their home win streak alive as they face No. 16 Lynn. The Mocs have a two-game win streak with wins over No. 35 PBA and Montevallo the last two weeks. Florida Southern's last loss was to No. 2 Saint Leo University. Valentin Hertweck continues to performa well as he improved to 54th in singles play for the nation, and back-to-back flight wins. Chris Fok Kow, Erik Nordblom, Matteo Feggi have all had a great showing the last two weeks as well.
  • Lynn continues to outlast opponents as they beat Rollins in a 4-3 score. Their first conference loss of the season was a 4-3 loss to Saint Leo last week. The Fighting Knights are led by No. 27 singles player Lucca Baptista with Ignacio Martinez ranked 40th in the nation with a 6-2 record. Lynn also has two top 40 doubles pairings with Baptista and Gonzalez in 32nd and Will Kirkman and Martinez in 19th.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is down in the overall series record, 9-30 in program history. The last time out the Mocs lost 5-2 in Boca Raton.
