Mocs Minutes: Several Teams in Action At Home to Open Spring Break

  • Florida Southern will host Findlay after a neutral-site match win against Davenport in Orlando at the USTA campus Tuesday afternoon. The Mocs have won four of the last five matches, including Saturday's 4-3 win over No. 4 Flagler at home. Another win was preceded by another great doubles point win as Chris Fok Kow and Matteo Feggi continued to put on a show at the #1 court in a 6-4 win. Mario Garoz and Ryan Rajakar took #2 with a 6-2 win before a loss by the Mocs on #3 court. FSC won on all but one singles court, including Alex Fascio in three sets, the reigning SSC Athlete of the Week.
  • Findlay will head to Lakeland on a spring break trip to the Sunshine State and ride a four-game win streak. The Oilers lost their first four games of the season but have since rallied for wins by Michigan Tech and Ohio Northern. To start their Orlando trip, the Oilers beat Davenport 4-3 and Bethel (IN) 6-1 ahead of the trip to Lakeland. UF is led in doubles by Luigi Bove/Dallas Ramsey and Andrew Codita/Ethan Shoesmith who had flight wins last time out. Oilers won five of the six singles courts against Bethel on Tuesday.
  • HISTORY: Mocs have won all three matches against Findlay in their history, with each of the wins at home. Last season, Florida Southern won 7-0 over the Oilers with a 6-1 and 9-0 victory in the previous years.

  • Florida Southern is coming off a huge weekend earning the first sweep under head coach Mo Triner defeating the Eckerd College Tritons first in game one 3-1, before sweeping the doubleheader 6-4 and 5-4. The Mocs were led by centerfielder Skyler Ralstin going 2-for-3 in all three games bringing in a total of three runners and scoring in every game. In the circle, the Tritons saw the arm of just two Moccasins in right-handed batter Ashley Blessing pitching two games for 14 total innings striking out eight batters. Mel Rogers, also a righty, pitched seven complete innings earning four strikeouts.
  • As a team FSC improved to fourth in the conference after sitting eighth concluded the Mocs first weekend series at Barry. The Mocs are on a three game win streak and will look to continue the streak outside of conference play for the next three doubleheaders, Despite the top five in the conference FSC is currently sitting ninth in batting with an overall average of .246 from the plate and from the circle. FSC is now sitting third in fielding with a .975 tied with Eckerd in second. Taylor Thomas is leading the Mocs in the SSC sitting 11th overall batting a .424 with 14 hits, four runs, five doubles, six RBIs, and a homer in 12 games of play.
  • Within Florida Southern Thomas is leading the way, behind Thomas is junior Ralstin batting a .333 totalling 22 hits, four runs, and four RBIs. Senior Jessica Bryson, batting a .321, going 9-for-28 from the plate, with fiveruns, two RBIs, and two doubles. Peck, who is leading the team in homers with four, is batting a .317 going 13-for-41 from the leadoff spot. The Lakeland native has four homers, 11 RBIs, eight runs, and a double. Rogers is leading FSC from the circle with four wins and one loss and a 2.08 ERA appearing in six games. The right-handed pitcher has 23 strikeouts on the season, allowing 11 runs, only seven being earned. Junior Blessin improved to 3-2 on the season, striking out 22 batters.
  • Wilmington is currently on a one game win streak defeating Florida Tech in the second to last series of the Wildcats Florida road trip.Wilmington has faced three Sunshine State Conference opponents and closes out the trip with Florida Southern being the final series. The Wildcats have split every game with SSC rivals facing Saint Leo falling in the opener 2-0 before defeating the Lions 1-0. Next Wilmington traveled to Embry-Riddle winning in 8 innings against the Eagles before falling 7-1. Lastly, Florida Tech took the first game of the doubleheader 5-2, before the Wildcats defeated the Panthers 8-4 to close out the series. Wilmington has not played a series at home yet but will return after the doubleheader with the Mocs to open up the Wildcats home season and conference series with Alliance.
  • Wilmington is led by Jess Reed who is batting a .500 playing in nine games for the Wildcats. Reed has gone 11-for-22 from the plate with seven runs. Behind Reed is Haley Downin batting a .387 going 12-for-31 from the plate with five runs, and three RBIs. Isabella Eleazar is batting a .333 with just four hits, a double, and three RBIs. Lexi Moore is the last Wildcat to bat in the 300s going 12-for-40 with eight runs and two RBIs. Wilmington has only pitched two women in the circle this year as Renamarie Rocha is supporting a 3.13ERA with a 1-0 record. Delani Sheehan is 2-3, owning a 4.41ERA striking out 15.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern and Wilmington are meeting for just the fourth time as the last meeting was in 2013 when the Mocs defeated the Wildcats 6-0.
  • Southwest Minnesota State is currently on a five game losing streak not seeing their first win yet this season with an 0-5 record. The Mustangs competed in the Washburn Invitational to open up its season and competed against Fort Hays State to open up the 2023 season with a 2-0 loss. On February 25 and 26 SMSU had doubleheaders both days in the invitational fall in 7-4 against Emporia State and 12-9 to Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, before concluding the opening invitational against Missouri- St. Louis (5-0) and Washburn (6-2). The Mustangs are still looking for their first win.
  • Riley Kramolisch is leading the Mustangs .286 batting average going 4-for-14 from the plate with four RBIs. Behind Kramolisch is Abby Russell who is the only player to hit a homer this season going 5-for-18 from the plate with three RBIs, four runs and supporting a .278 batting average.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Mustangs will meet for the sixth time as FSC leads the series 5-0. The last meeting was in 2017 as the Mocs swept the doubleheader 5-2 and 4-0.

  • Florida Southern will take on Assumption this Friday with an eight-game win streak and registering votes in the latest NCBWA poll. FSC had a dominating performance against Florida Tech on Tuesday with a 17-7 win over the Panthers. Mocs had three homers in the game, one each by Drew Cavanaugh, Jeff Liquori, and Mitch Donofrio. Tying a season-high ten-run margin of victory, Mocs had a season-high eight runs in a single inning, with a monster fifth inning. With 17 hits on the night, Florida Southern continued its great run after sweeping the last two weekend series before the midweek battle against Florida Tech.
  • The Mocs have continued to improve at the plate with a now .309 batting average and a league-high 24 homers and 155 hits so far this season. Cavanaugh, after winning his second SSC Player of the Week award of the season on Monday, has three games in a row with a homer and tie Liquori and Donofrio with five on the season, each tied as conference best. Liquori was moved to the leadoff spot the last couple of weeks and has an SSC-best 17 runs and 20 RBI. Bryce Safferwich has the team's best average, batting .415 in his 12 games.
  • On the mound, Mocs stay steady with top starting pitchers and a deep bullpen that saw five pitchers in the 17-7 rout of Florida Tech. Lake Fisher was tabbed for the win and finished with seven strikeouts in the game. Justin Wit had a great two innings with no runs allowed, as did Christian Suarez and Tommy Turkett, each with no runs allowed. As a team, Mocs have a 4.46 ERA and Aric McAtee leads starters with a .215 opposing batting average. Nathan Madej has a team-best 32 strikeouts in just four starts.
  • Assumption will head to Lakeland to face the Mocs on Friday after a busy week of several teams on a Florida spring break trip. The Greyhounds lost their last two games, with a game still to be played at Palm Beach Atlantic this afternoon. Assumption lost 20-3 against Rollins on Tuesday and 6-5 against Flagler yesterday. Against the Tars, Greyhounds gave up one homer, three triples, and three doubles for a combined 16 hits. A late rally by Assumption against the Saints was short as the Greyhounds lost their second straight.
  • The Greyhounds are batting .260 as a team with Jared Berardino the team leader, batting .405 on the season and three homers. Jake Hamel and Christopher Rabias are also batting over .300 with Max Lefrancois and Kevin Cox over .300 in their limited appearances. On the mound, Greyhounds are struggling with a 9.63 ERA and they had four HBP against the Tars on Tuesday. They have given up 12 homers on the season and opponents have a .356 batting average.
  • History: These teams have faced off just two times in its history, with the last a 16-2 Moccasin win in March 1994. Mocs also won 12-5 in March 1992 in their first matchup together. Average runs for the Mocs is 14 and they outscored Assumption 28-7 in the two games.

  • The Florida Southern men's and women's track teams heads back to Tampa Friday night for their second outdoor meet of the 2023 season. The Mocs were most recently in action Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Tampa Track Classic. FSC opened the 2023 season with several strong performances and looks to build on that momentum Friday night.
  • The Florida Southern men will compete in four events Friday including the 800m, 1500m, 5000m and 4x400m relay. A trio of Mocs will see action in the 800m led by sophomore Jaylen Caneus. Freshman Luke Kaelin will be the lone Moc in the 1500m while 16 members of the team will toe the line for the 5000m. Junior Owen Allen enters with the top qualifying time for the Mocs in the event and will be joined by top performers Bryson Yamnitz, Alex Guy, and Anthony Matthew among others. The final event for the Mocs will be the 4x400m relay which will feature freshman Luke Reeves, Caneus, junior Tyler Gulluscio and freshman Karl van Gelder.
  • The Florida Southern women will take on three events including the 800m, 1500m and 5000m. Freshman Caitlin Beery will lead a quartet of Mocs in the 800m as she enters with the top qualifying time. Junior Jinia Johnson will then lead another quartet of Mocs in the 1500m while both Beery and junior Carolina Titus will run both the 800m and 1500m. The dynamic duo of sophomore Emma Mussante and junior Ellie Fluman will lead the group in the 5000m as a total of 10 Mocs will be competing in the event.

  • Records: No. 24 Florida Southern 4-2, 2-2 SSC | Hilton Head Spring Break Trip – Opponents to be determined
  • No. 24 Florida Southern travels to Hilton Head for its spring break trip with a four-game win streak. The Mocs lost their first two matches of the season against No. 1 Barry and No. 6 Lynn, but have been red hot ever since, including a 4-3 win over No. 23 Rollins. Against Davenport, Mocs swept the doubles field and won all but one court in singles for a 6-1 win. FSC is led by Olivia Bryant with a five-match win streak, including the last two wins at the #3 position. Vivien Charvatova has also had a great run with four wins in a row, along with Laia Pasini. Mocs have been great with the doubles competition and carried that momentum into singles with several top finishes.
  • History: Mocs will take the trip to South Carolina spring break in a fun tradition for women's tennis against different competition. Last year, FSC won 4-0 on the trip to Hilton Head with wins against Davis & Elkins, Savannah State, Lewis, and Ashland. The last loss by the Mocs at Hilton Head was a 5-4 loss against Newberry March 3, 2018.

  • No. 19 Florida Southern is looking to rebound after back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked programs. The Moccasins are seeking their first win at home in 2023 and are in the midst of a six-game home stand.
  • Senior Sean Nolan leads the FSC offensive attack with 14 goals through four games and five assists for a team-best 19 points. Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck sits second in scoring behind Nolan with 10 goals and four assists for 14 points. Three others have double-digit points this season including Nolan Tighe, Jay Minor and Andrew Medeiros. Freshman Jacob Czyz has taken all but five face offs for the Mocs this season and has gone 52-of-118 (.441) at the 'X'. He also leads the team in ground balls with 27.
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team-best 12 turnovers this season while scooping up 13 ground balls to rank second on the squad. Seniors Lucas Sommers and Zac Fitzgerald each have caused six turnovers to rank tied for second on the team. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season led by graduate student Maxwell Freestone who has a 2-2 record this season with a 12.87 goals against average. Freestone has made 42 saves in 195-plus minutes of action.
  • Dominican is winless in 2023 through three games having dropped contests to Mercy (23-1), D'Youville (13-12) and Lynn (24-4). The Chargers won six contests in 2022 and were selected to finish fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Freshman Sean Cosgrove leads the Chargers with four goals this season. He currently ranks tied for second on the squad in points with four. Redshirt junior William Gordon sits in second on the team in goals with three while redshirt senior Daniel Carson leads the team with six points and a team-best five assists. Sophomore Patrick Roderka has taken 74 of the 87 face offs this season for the Chargers. He has won 31 of his 74 attempts (.419) at the 'X' and leads the team with 20 ground balls.
  • Redshirt junior Brian Barker leads the defense with seven caused turnovers. He is joined at the top of the list by Gordon who ranks second on the team with five CTs. Cosgrove is the top non-face off specialist in ground balls with six followed closely by Barker who has five. The Chargers have used four goalkeepers through three games with sophomore Gerardo Caltagirone seeing the most action at 88-plus minutes. He has a 23.14 goals against average with 16 saves in three games of action. Redshirt junior Steffen Peabody has seeing 64-plus minutes of action in the cage with a 23.26 goals against average while making eight saves in two games of action.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Chargers have never met on the lacrosse field. FSC has met just one current member of the CACC and that was Chestnut Hill back in 2016, a game the Mocs won 12-10 in Lakeland.

  • No. 3 Florida Southern will travel to Tennessee and Alabama for a pair of road games after defeating then-no. 2 Adelphi 15-10 on Feb. 24. In the win, Giana Murphy paced the team with seven total points with two assists and five goals, on five shots on goal. For her performance in the win, Murphy was tabbed the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week as well as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week.
  • In the win over the Panthers, the Mocs saw Rylie Rittberg come into goal and earn the win after making four huge saves in the top-4 matchup with allowing just a single goal in 30 minutes of action. Florida Southern saw Lizzy Lynch tally five goals in the while Jackie Stoller and Sammy Gorrasi each netted two. Abby McFerren had the lone other goal on the night as Ellie Griffin finished with two points on two assists.
  • As a team, the Mocs average 16.7 goals per game and allow 11.3. Murphy leads the team on the year in points (16) as well as goals (11) and sits second in assists (5). Stoller, who led Florida Southern on the road to open the year, has 15 points with eight goals and seven assists. Lynch and McFerren round out the other double-digit point players through three games with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Lynch stands at nine goals on the young season with McFerren at seven.
  • In goal, McKenzie Gaghan has gotten the nod in all three games for the start and is 2-0 while Rylie Rittberg has seen 47 minutes of action with a 1-0 record.
  • Lee hosts Florida Southern after falling 13-3 to then-no. 7 University of Indianapolis on Feb. 25. In the loss, Brittney White led the offensive attack with a pair of goals while Hannah Vecsey had the lone other goal. Maggie Luzier registered one assist in the game. In goal, Kaleigh Bernard played the full 60 and had 10 stops, taking the loss and moving to 3-1 on the year.
  • As a team, the Flames average 13.2 goals per game and allow just 7.8, with the outlier of 13 to UIndy. White is the team leader in points (20) and goals (18) while taking a team-high 33 shots this season through five games landing 28 on frame.
  • Alabama-Huntsville was receiving votes in the latest ILWomen/IWLCA DII Coaches Poll. The Chargers are 3-3 after its most recent win of 18-2 against Catawba. UAH fell to then-no. 15 Lynn 13-9 to open the season before falling to then-no.7 Tampa 19-3. In the most recent win, a pair of Chargers finished with four points. Katie Gerber had three goals and one assist while Katie Williams finished with four goals. In goal, Tori Ryan earned the win playing just 15 minutes making four saves while Shaina Doser played the remaining 45 minutes making one stop.
  • On the season, the Chargers average 11.8 goals per game and edge opponents to 10.2 goals per game. Isadora Springer is the team leader in goals (15) and points (16) while Katie Gerber is the leader in assists with four. Between the pipes, Tori Ryan is 3-1 in 240 minutes of action while Shaina Doser is 0-2 in 123 minutes. Ryan has tallied 34 saves in six games played.
  • History:This will be the first ever meeting for Florida Southern and Lee while it's the second meeting between FSC and Alabama-Huntsville. The Mocs defeated the Chargers in the first meeting 18-8 on March 18, 2022 in Lakeland. Abby McFerren and Lizzy Lynch each registered seven points in the win with McFerren scoring a game-best give goals and having two assists while Lynch finished with three goals and four assists. Hailey Daleo had five points on four goals and one assist. For the Chargers, Katie Gerber was second on the team in points and goals with three.

  • Florida Southern after opening up the 2023 season with a difficult start falling in the tri-match in straight sets. The Moccasins bounced back a little with another tri-match against Palm Beach State College falling in all sets but taking several seeds to three sets.
  • In the #1 seed was Sarah Crocker and Ashli Mckenny, a new duo that battled it out in both games together but fell in game one (21-14; 21-13) before the (21-12, 21-12) final. The only ladder to take the Panthers to three sets in the first match was the #5 seed made up of Chloe Maxwell and Madeline Sanders falling (21-16, 21-15; 15-11) the first three set match of the year. In game two, the Mocs started to find their stride taking the PBSC to three sets in the #2 seed with Emma Shaddix and Olivia D'Agostino (21-17; 21-13, 16-14) and #3 seed Hayley St. Martin and Christina Ramazio (21-15, 21-18, 15-13), and finally the #5 seed again with Chloe Maxwell and Madeline Sanders (21-17, 21-11, and 18-16). All matches that went to three sets were the closest game the Mocs have seen all year.
  • State College of Florida The Manatees are on a six game losing stretch falling to Lake Sumter State College to open up the season 4-1 and then St. Johnson River State College with another 4-1 loss. The next three SCF matches ended with 5-0 decisions as the last match was close between St Johns River State College falling 3-2.
  • HISTORY: This will be just the third meeting between the Mocs and Manatees as FSC is undefeated winning both games 3-2 last year on March 5.
