GENEVA, Ohio – Florida Southern College earned its 28
th Individual NCAA National Championship as
Kyle Micallef from men's swimming won the 50 freestyle in the Wednesday evening finals of the 2024 NCAA Swimming Championships.
Micallef set a new Sunshine State Conference and FSC program record with a time of 19.28 time in an incredible championship performance. The Australian native outswam his opponents, besting second place by 0.05 (19.33). Micallef earned his opportunity for a national title, the first of his career, after a 19.57 prelims time, good for fourth in the morning session.
The senior has dominated sprint events at the team and conference level throughout his career and placed eighth in last year's 50 free NCAA finals. A 16-time All-American, Micallef made it to the A final three years in a row and earned his fourth-straight NCAA appearance after his automatic qualification time of 19.48 set at the Panther Invitational. At this year's SSC Championships, Micallef won the 50 free and placed second in the 100 free, while adding three relay titles to earn his third All-SSC honor of his career.
Florida Southern College swimming has a rich championship tradition with 13 NCAA National Championships, including Micallef's 50 free title tonight. As a college, Florida Southern has 28 Individual National Championships, a title in 2022 by Ludovico Viberti in the 100 breaststroke preceding tonight's title. With back-to-back team runner-up finishes in 2013 and 2014, the Mocs have placed in the top 10 at the national stage in nine of 12 years.
