BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 10-team field at the 2024 Sunshine State Conference men's golf championships faced a rather difficult day with winds swirling on a cool day. No. 9/13 Florida Southern shot a seven-over 295 final round and finished at 861 (-3) for seventh place at Osprey Point Golf Club Tuesday.
The Moccasins finished the challenging event at three-under 861 after scores of 284, 282, and their final round 295 (+7). No. 25/29 Barry won its third straight and seventh overall SSC title at 846 (-18) after firing off a final round 283 (-5). Michael Hay of Nova Southeastern won the individual title by one stroke at 205 (-11) using tournament scores of 66, 67, and 72.
Tyler Mistretta led Florida Southern wire-to-wire and finished in the top 15 of players at 212 (-4). The North Palm Beach, Fla. native carded a final round 72 on the par-72 6,786-yard Raven/Falcon course. Mistretta paired his final round score of 72 with his first two rounds of 70 to make up his 54-hole event score.
As a team, Florida Southern wrapped up the tournament third in the team standings in total pars with 173 as Mistretta paced the team and finished the event tied for third out of the 50 players with 40.
Max Barile and
Donte Groppuso turned in scores to finish in the top half of the field as Barile, who finished at 214 (-2), finished tied for 16
th as Groppuso, who had a 217 (+1) score, finished tied for 22
nd. The Duo finished the day with a one-stroke difference as Barile shot a final round 73 (+1) and Groppuso a 74 (+2).
Adam Alvarez just missed the cut to the top half of the field in 26
th place as the redshirt senior from Winter Haven, Fla. carded a final round 77 (+5) for a 219 (+3) tournament score. He was responsible for the team's low round of the event of 69 (-3) during Monday's second round.
Max Watson closed the players in the field for the Mocs in 47th place at 238 (+14). Watson turned in rounds of 80, 74, 76 for the 54-hole event.
No. 9/13 Florida Southern will await the 2024 NCAA selection release for the South/Southeast Regional that is set to be hosted at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga. on May 9-11.
