LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's cross country team picked up a second place finish in the Holloway Collegiate XC Opener hosted by the Moccasins at Holloway Park. The Mocs nearly took first Friday morning as they finished just two points out of the lead. Fellow Sunshine State Conference program Nova Southeastern claimed the team title with 45 points while the Mocs put up 47 points.
Senior
Emma Mussante led the way Friday as she placed second overall as she battled for the lead throughout the race. The Middleburg, Fla., native completed the 4.2K course in 15:16.44, finishing just under a second behind the leader, Leena Saidi from Nova Southeastern. The next FSC runner to cross the line was graduate student
Ellie Fluman who earned a top-10 finish by crossing the finish line in seventh with a time of 15:27.19.
Senior
Mya Stam just missed out on a top-10 finish as she took 11
th overall after stopping the clock at 15:34.14. The final two Moccasin scorers finished back-to-back in 15
th and 16
th, respectively. Sophomore
Emma Pfeiffer crossed the line first with a time of 15:40.73 while graduate student
Cheyenne Young came in just under four seconds later in 15:44.28.
The next three FSC runners finished with five spots of each other as sophomore
Emma Nales-Torchio placed 23
rd while stopping the clock at 15:58.08. Two spots later, junior
Rachel Hockenberry took 25
th while clocking in at 16:00.32. The final member of the group was sophomore
Kira Mothershed with a 27
th-place showing while turning in a time of 16:07.37.
Nova Southeastern claimed both the team and individual titles Friday morning while fellow Sunshine State Conference schools finished second through fifth as FSC took second, Tampa placed third, followed by Embry-Riddle and Barry.
The Florida Southern women's cross country team will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 6 as the Mocs compete at the Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. (EST).
