Three School Records Set at Jimmy Carnes Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's track team set school records in three of the four events the Mocs competed in at the full team's season opener at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational. Freshman Daniel Welling set both the freshman and school record in the 1000m, junior Anthony Matthew broke his own record in the mile while junior Chris Colavita lowered his own record in the 3000m.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Freshman Daniel Welling opened up the competition for the Mocs as he took eighth in the 1000m while setting a new program record at 2:32.93.
  • Eleven Moccasins competed in the mile led by junior Anthony Matthew who nearly took a second off his school record time while crossing the finish in 4:08.81. Matthew was the lone NCAA Division II runner in the top-10. Finishing nine spots back in 13th was freshman Andrew Nyland who posted the eighth fastest time in program history at 4:16.84 while also setting the new freshman record at FSC. Senior Aiden Redmond and sophomore Simon DeVoss came in four spots back in 17th and 18th, respectively. Redmond stopped the clock at 4:17.84 while DeVoss came across the finish in 4:17.93. The next Moccasin duo was graduate student Elijah De La Cerda and freshman Eli Zuppa who placed 20th and 21st. De La Cerda crossed the line in 4:18.86 while Zuppa came in at 4:19.38. The final five Moccasin finishers were sophomore Dylan Bailey (24th, 4:21.78), senior Seth Augustynowski (26th, 4:23.62), sophomore Cole Summers (27th, 4:25.16), sophomore William Canales (35th, 4:28.95) and freshman Tyler Gaines (39th, 4:32.54).  
  • Matthew and DeVoss went on to compete in the 800m as they finished third and fourth, respectively, behind a pair of runners from Florida State University. Matthew stopped the clock at 1:54.32 while DeVoss posted a time of 1:54.60 which rank as the third and fourth-best times in program history.
  • The final event for the Mocs, the 3000m, featured 12 FSC runners led by junior Chris Colavita who broke his own school record while finishing seventh overall. He completed the distance in 8:23.60 to shave over three seconds off his previous record time. Similar to Matthew's record performance in the mile, Colavita was the lone non-NCAA Division I runner in the top-10. De La Cerda just missed out on the top-10 as he placed 11th as the second non-Division I finisher while posting a time of 8:31.21. The time earned him fourth in the FSC record book. The final top-10 record performance was performed by Redmond who took 15th while turning in a time of 8:35.40. The final two Mocs in the top-20 were Bailey and Zuppa who placed 19th and 20th, respectively. Bailey came across in 8:39.58 while Zuppa finished a second back at 8:40.61. The final seven Moccasin finishers were Augustynowski (25th, 8:48.14), Nyland (29th, 8:50.22), sophomore Connor Brooks (36th, 8:59.35), Canales (37th, 9:01.88), Gaines (40th, 9:04.24), Welling (43rd, 9:12.05) and graduate student Luke Dickinson (50th, 9:24.32).
