LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern senior Sydney Gomes was named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week after a historic performance across the Mocs Christmas Classic, marking her third SSC weekly honor this season, her second Player of the Week, and the fourth weekly award of her career.
Gomes delivered milestone moments and all-around excellence in both games of the tournament. In the opener against Southern Wesleyan, she recorded her 500th career rebound while posting a dominant double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. She filled the stat sheet with five steals, three assists, and two blocks, leading the Mocs on both ends of the floor in the victory over the Warriors.
She followed that performance with another memorable outing in the finale against Erskine. Gomes eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career at the free-throw line, ultimately finishing with 21 points. She added six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block in the win over the Fleet, continuing her steady impact as a scorer, defender, and playmaker.
With the milestones achieved during the week, Gomes etched her name into the Florida Southern record book as the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and the 25th to collect 500 career rebounds.
After the holiday break, the Mocs return to action on New's Year Eve returning to conference action hosting the Sailfish in Jenkins Field House.
