HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – After a schedule change due to Friday's late weather, No. 10 Florida Southern men's golf closed out the 2025 NCAA DII South/Southeast Regional in a bit of a rough spot, tied for seventh out of 20 teams. Only the top seven teams qualify for the NCAA National Championships.
Â
The Moccasin saw themselves tied for seventh with No. 9 USC Aiken and headed to the 18
th tee for a two-team playoff. Florida Southern and USC Aiken would split into two fivesomes where the Mocs'
Jaylen Abbas and
Freddie Parlby got paired with three of the Pacers to tee off first.
Max Barile,
Colton Swartz, and
Tyler Mistretta would get paired with a pair of Pacers for the final grouping.
Â
The first group of five finished with the Mocs going par, par, as the Pacers went par, par, bogey, leaving the door open. As the final group reached the green, the weather rolled in and delayed the playoff, in a scenario that would not favor the Mocs if it prolonged. All three Florida Southern golfers, Swartz, Barile, and Mistretta would be on the green with birdie putts as USC Aiken had one birdie look and one off the green chipping.
Â
One small window was all the Mocs needed as the weather cleared long enough to hit the green and finish it off. Mistretta would make par as did USC Aiken before Swartz stepped up and made his birdie putt. The Pacers would see another par which sent the Mocs to the National Championship with two players, one for each Florida Southern and USC Aiken unfinished.
Â
As a team for the third and final round, the Mocs struggled and shot 298 (+10) and sat tied for seventh with an event score of 869 (+5), which resulted in dropping four spots over the final 18 holes. Ahead of Florida Southern in the standings, and too advancing to the National Championship were, regional champs, No. 4 North Georgia (-28), No. 14 Wingate (-4), No. 2 West Florida (-3), No. 13 Columbus State (E), No. 7 Lee (+3), and No. 3 Lincoln Memorial (+4).
Â
All five Mocs shot nearly the same score for the third and final round as
Colton Swartz and
Tyler Mistretta turned in 74's (+2), while
Max Barile,
Freddie Parlby, and
Jaylen Abbas all carded 75's (+3). Barile was the top Moc finishing in seventh individually, while Swartz and Mistretta were tied for 24
th. Parlby and Abbas were 75
th and 98
th, respectively, out of the 109 players who competed.
Â
Florida Southern finished the regional in the top 10 in par 3 scoring (3.08, +5), par 5 scoring (4.73, -16), total pars (3
rd, 178), and eagles (T1, 3). Both Swartz and Mistretta were tied for sixth on par 3 scoring, averaging a 2.83 (-2) while
Max Barile led the field in par 5 scoring at 4.33 (-8) and total birdies (16), while he sat in fourth in par 4 scoring at 3.97 (-1). Over 54 holes, Mistretta was top three in eagles (2) and total pars (38). Â
Â
Florida Southern will now set its sights on the National Championships, May 19-23, hosted at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The first three days will be stroke play to determine the teams that will advance to medal match play. The National Quarterfinals and Semifinals are slated for May 22nd, with the Championship match on May 23.
