LAKELAND, Fla. —Florida Southern College women's soccer (3-0-1, 0-0-0 SSC) secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Georgia College State University (1-3-1, 0-0-0 PBC) on Sunday at the Barnett Athletic Complex, highlighted by a first-half lead and a subsequent shutout performance by the Moccasins' goalkeeper. For the first time since 2014, Florida Southern women's soccer has opened the season with three straight victories. The milestone triumph also improves the program's all-time series record against the Bobcats to 4-2-2.
FSC was lifted by milestone moments as
Isabella Payne netted her first career goal in a Mocs uniform and
Bria Weldon tallied her first and second goals. On the defensive end, goalkeeper
Carly Brodsky secured her third consecutive shutout to anchor Florida Southern's strong opening stretch.
The first half began with a decisive strike from Payne, who put the Mocs ahead in the sixth minute. Brodsky stood strong in goal, denying two shots from Georgia College. FSC maintained pressure throughout the half, forcing Georgia's goalie, Maddie Drake, into several saves, yet the score remained 1-0 at the break.
The second half commenced with the Mocs asserting control as Weldon capitalized on an assist from
Brinley Beorlegui to score in the 66th minute, extending the lead to 2-0. Weldon continued to make her mark, converting a penalty kick in the 77th minute to further secure the advantage. Throughout the half, Florida Southern maintained defensive discipline, with goalkeeper Brodsky making a crucial save to preserve the 3-0 final score.
Payne scored the game-winning goal for the Mocs, finding the net with her only shot on target. Weldon added two goals to the team's tally, converting two out of her three shots. Brodsky maintained a clean sheet with three saves over 90 minutes, facing six shots in total. Beorlegui contributed with an assist, helping set up one of the team's goals.
Maddie Drake stood out for Georgia College, playing 63 minutes in goal and recording five saves against 11 shots faced, conceding just one goal. Adriana Duque contributed offensively with two shots, one of which was on target. Meanwhile, Sarah Mason and Brittany Bakke each managed a shot on goal.
Looking ahead, Florida Southern will host Lynn University on September 20 at 7 p.m. The match will take place at Berend Field in Lakeland, Fla., as the home team looks to secure a victory on its familiar turf.
