LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's tennis (6-2) defeated No. 16 Grand Valley State University (6-1) 5-2 on Tuesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. Florida Southern secured the victory by winning four singles matches and claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions.
Florida Southern claimed the doubles point with victories on courts two and three.
Emily Jennewein and
Ronja Scheuermann secured a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Mischa Briggs and Ipek Sakiroglu, while
Annika Berrendorf and
Jolie Miller clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 decision at No. 3 doubles against Lauren Burkett and Rachel Sam. Grand Valley State picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, where Vale Mozas and Natas Sengphrachanh defeated
Kennedi Brown and
Josie Holderbach, 6-0.
In singles action, Holderbach put the Mocs ahead with a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Briggs 6-3, 6-1. Grand Valley State responded with a win on court one as Sengphrachanh edged Scheuermann 6-3, 7-6(7). Jennewein extended Florida Southern's lead with a hard-fought three-set win at No. 3 singles, overcoming Mozas 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5).
Berrendorf added another point for the Moccasins at No. 4 singles, despite a comeback attempt by Sakiroglu, which resulted in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory. Miller secured the decisive point for Florida Southern at No. 5 singles, rallying past Anna Soteras 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Diana Volkov closed out the match for Florida Southern with a win at No. 6 singles, defeating Burkett 7-5, 7-6(4).
Holderbach posted a win at No. 2 singles. Jennewein recorded a victory at No. 3 singles and teamed with Scheuermann for a win at No. 2 doubles. Miller collected a win at No. 5 singles and partnered with Berrendorf for a victory at No. 3 doubles. Volkov added a win at No. 6 singles.
