Moccasins Win Two of Three Individual Events and Stand Second on Day One of Sharks Invitational

DAVIE â€" Juan Tolosa and Luis Rojas won the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM respectively, and were just two of the six Moccasins who reached NCAA “B” qualifying times on the first day of the fourth annual Sharks Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern. That performance helped Florida Southern finish the day in second place in the 8-team meet, trailing only the University of Tampa.

The Moccasins scored 306½ points Saturday, while the Spartans scored 359½. Florida Southern won two of the three individual races, with Saint Leo winning the other, but Tampa made up ground by taking five of the top nine spots in the 50-yard freestyle, and claiming the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay that brought day one of the four-day meet to a close.

The first event was the 1,000-freestyle where Tolosa finished first with a time of 9:14.15. That was less than half a second away from the school record he set at last year’s Sunshine State Conference Championships. It also allowed him to defeat freshman teammate Franco Lupoli, who finished second with a time of 9:21.52. That too was an NCAA “B” qualifying time and more than 15 seconds faster than his previous top time. In the Mocs’ previous meet at Rollins before Thanksgiving, Lupoli had finished first, and Tolosa had been second.

Raul Garrastazu, who had finished second to Tolosa in two earlier meets this season, gave the Mocs three of the top four swimmers in the 1,000 on Saturday with his fourth-place time of 9:24.32. That was 17 seconds better than his previous top time, and another NCAA “B” standard for the Moccasins. Jesus Marin finished seventh in the 1,000 with his best time of the season too (9:38.23).

Rojas then won the 200-IM for Florida Southern in 1:49.44, hitting a “B” standard there as well. He beat out Nova Southeastern’s Marco Aldabe by 1.08 seconds, leading from start to finish. Thomas Nguyen and Alec Wathen also reached the finals of the 200-IM, and placed eighth and ninth.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Robbie Swan was Florida Southern’s top swimmer as he became the first Moccasin this year to break 21 seconds during Saturday’s prelims (20.62) and achieved an NCAA “B” qualifying time in that event, though it’s the third year in a row Swan has done that. Swan ended up sixth in the 50-freestyle finals Saturday with a time of 20.89.

Florida Southern also had two winners in the consolation finals, with Dylan Lake taking that spot in the 200-IM, and Allan Gutierrez doing that in the 50-freestyle. Gutierrez’s time was actually identical to Swan’s at 20.89 seconds, making him the sixth Moccasin to reach an NCAA “B” standard on Saturday.

The final race of the day was the 200-yard medley relay where Florida Southern’s top team of Rojas, Patrick Costello, Gutierrez, and Swan placed third with a time of 1:32.31. Tampa, however, used first- and second-place finishes to widen its lead.

Day two of the Sharks Invitational begins Sunday morning with prelims at 10 a.m., and concludes with finals in five events at 5 p.m.
