DAVIE â€" Jesus Marin broke a meet record in the 200-yard freestyle Sunday, Allan Gutierrez broke a school record in the 100-yard butterfly, and a total of eight Moccasins hit NCAA “B†qualifying times on the second day of the Sharks Invitational. The Mocs remained behind front-running Tampa, but increased their lead over third-place and host Nova Southeastern.
Marin picked up his second individual win of the season by setting a meet record in the 200-yard freestyle. His time of 1:38.50 was only four-tenths of a second ahead of Tampa’s Damen Phieffer, and it broke the previous Sharks Invitational record by 0.02 seconds, set last year by Florida Southern’s Luis Rojas, who finished third in Sunday’s race with a 1:38.93. Franco Lupoli was fourth for Florida Southern at 1:40.42, and all three Moccasin swimmers had NCAA “B†times.
Gutierrez also reached the finals in the 200-freestyle, and though he fell short of a “B†time himself, Raul Garrastazu and Juan Tolosa both got it while swimming in the consolation finals.
The 200-freestyle wasn’t the only race where Florida Southern put four swimmers into the finals. They did the same in the 100-yard butterfly, where Gutierrez, Edson Lima, Diego Gimenez, and Garrastazu all made it. Gutierrez was the runner-up with a time of 48.57, which broke the meet record in the 100-butterfly, but he was 0.25 seconds behind Matheus Assis of Saint Leo. His time still set a school record for the Moccasins, breaking the mark set last year by Joakim Hvalgren at the SSC Championships.
While Gutierrez finished second in the 100-butterfly, Lima was fourth and Gimenez was sixth, with both Moccasins swimming in an NCAA “B†time. Garrastazu was tenth in the finals.
In the only other individual race of the night, Dylan Lake placed sixth in the 400-yard IM, and Alec Wathen was 10th. Tolosa won the consolation finals of the 400-IM, and his time of 4:06.75 was actually the Mocs’ best of the day and best of the year in that event.
In the two relay races, Florida Southern finished fourth in each of them, but the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Rojas, Gutierrez, Gimenez and Robbie Swan reached an NCAA “B†standard with a season-best time of 1:22.26. Their second 200-freestyle relay team of Marin, Lima, Thomas Nguyen and Wathen nearly reached the same standard with a sixth-place finish.
The Moccasins ended the night with a fourth-place showing in the 400-yard medley relay, with Rojas, Wathen, Lima and Marin clocking in at 3:24.85.
Day three of the Sharks Invitational begins Monday morning with prelims at 10 a.m., and concludes with finals in five more events at 5 p.m.
