DAVIE â€" Florida Southern got not one, but two NCAA automatic qualifiers on the final day of the Sharks Invitational Tuesday, as Thomas Nguyen and Luis Rojas claimed the top two spots in the 200-yard backstroke, and Juan Tolosa picked up his third win of the meet by taking the 1,650-yard freestyle. The two individual wins by the Moccasins allowed Florida Southern to close things out with a second-place finish among the eight teams competing.
Tolosa’s win came first on Tuesday and it came in a meet-record time of 15:34.50. The sophomore from Guipuzcoa, Spain broke the old Sharks Invitational record by three seconds, and finished 16.53 seconds ahead of teammate Raul Garrastazu who placed second. Tolosa has already won nine distance events this season, including all three at the Sharks Invitational. Both Tolosa and Garrastazu had NCAA provisional qualifying times, as did Franco Lupoli, who placed fifth in 16:07.93.
Florida Southern was even more dominant in the 200-backstroke Tuesday, where Nguyen, Rojas, Evan Coleman, and Diego Gimenez all reached the finals, and Nguyen also set a new meet record. He actually set that record in the preliminaries with a mark of 1:45.63, which was his first “A†time of the day. The senior from Snellville, Georgia then achieved another “A†time in the evening’s finals with a 1:45.70, and both times were better than the old Sharks Invitational record set by Florida Southern’s Jeb Halfacre in 2011.
Rojas came in second, 0.91 seconds behind Nguyen, which gave Florida Southern another NCAA automatic qualifier. They were the Mocs’ first “A†times of the season. Coleman was fifth in the 200-backstroke (1:52.61), and Gimenez was eighth (1:55.68).
The Moccasins also sent four swimmers to the finals of the 100-yard freestyle, where Robbie Swan was their top performer with a third-place finish (45.26), but Jesus Marin was six one-hundredths of a second behind him in fourth place. Allan Gutierrez was 0.18 seconds behind Swan for fifth place, and Rojas was tenth. Though Gimenez did not reach the main finals, his runner-up time in the consolation finals gave Florida Southern five NCAA “B†times in that event.
In the last individual race of the meet, the Moccasins had two swimmers in the finals of the 200-yard breaststroke where Dylan Lake finished fifth (2:08.92), and Patrick Costello was eighth (2:09.64) with Florida Southern’s two best times of the season.
Tuesday’s lone relay race brought the meet to a close, with Florida Southern placing third in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Gutierrez, Rojas, Marin, and Swan turned in a time of 3:00.53 that was the Mocs’ best of the season and an NCAA “B†standard as well.
The Moccasins, who are ranked #1 in the country, finished with 1386½ points, which put them 332 behind Sharks Invitational champion Tampa, the #8 team in Division II. Earlier this year, the Moccasins beat the Spartans in a dual meet in Lakeland. The Moccasins won six of the 14 individual races in the Sharks Invitational, with an additional win coming in a relay event. The Spartans won five individual events, and four of the five relays that were contested.
Host Nova Southeastern finished third, and was 631 points behind Tampa and 299 behind Florida Southern. Florida Tech was fourth, with Saint Leo completing the top-five.
Florida Southern’s next competition will be a dual meet on Friday, January 10, when it hosts Emory at 4 p.m.
